Dance, Dance, Montaigne Revolution : An Evening at the Circle of Song
Several months ago, Revolution swept across the nation of Montaigne. The oppressed peasantry rose up and swept the corrupt and evil nobles from power. The decadent Emperor Leon was executed and a new Revolutionary Council came to power. While some view the Council’s reforms as excessive, particularly the daily executions of almost the entire noble class, the common people understand that only by completely starting over can their nation rise to greatness again.
For those unfamiliar with the 7th Sea setting, Montaigne is analogous to France after its Revolution. Avalon is Great Britain as ruled by Queen Elaine. Eisen is Germany still divided by religious and cultural differences under the rule of seven Eisenfursts. Castille is Spain, still recovering from a recent war with Montaigne. The islands of Vodacce are the complicated city states of Italy. The Vesten are the people of Denmark and Scandanavia, struggling to reconcile their ancient Viking-like traditions with their new Guild laws. The frigid lands of Ussura correspond to the lands of Russia.

Introduction
A: Welcome. Welcome all of you to Montaigne, circa 1670. For centuries, the nobles of Montaigne have watched over and guided these fair lands and the people who dwell here.
B: You mean they abused and tortured the people of this land. The nobles played their little games at court and held their fancy parties while the common folk outside starved to death. The nobles have always been a pox upon this land. They even led us into invading our neighboring Castille and far off Ussura at the same time! Finally, they drove the common folk too far. The peasants rose up in a glorious Revolution that swept the nobles from power.
A: Glorious? Not content with overthrowing l’Empereur and the proper government of Montaigne, the smelly peasants began killing any who bore the noble blood. Then they went further and began slaughtering those who merely supported the rightful rulers of Montaigne and then women, the elderly, even children.
B: Sacrifices must be made for the good of the people. The nobles bled our land dry for centuries and their bloody reign of terror had to end. And in this time of change and justice, the price must be paid in blood.
A: When all seems dark, a ray of light shines all the brighter. Such brings us here to the Circle of Song. Within this restaurant, every member of the staff is a talented performer. They can sing, they can dance, after all, this is Montaigne. The entertainment here is among the best in all of Theah.
B: One of the quirks of the place is that the guests do not need to pay for their food. Payment is handled ahead of time, so many of you were actually given an evening here as a gift from another. All of you sought an evening here to relax and escape the daily executions and brutal patrols outside.
A: Yes, those damn patrols. It is hard enough to live in this city without having a patrol stopping you every five minutes and demanding to see you papers. Did you know that the penalty for not keeping your papers handy? Imprisonment and death!
B: So, welcome. Enjoy the hospitality of our restaurant and be at-
<A sudden banging at the door interrupts the speakers>
Madame Fletchyr opens the door and greets Citizen Yanick Dore with surprise. He sweeps into the room with a half dozen guards and a prisoner at his back.
Dore: Good evening, Madame Fletchyr. Do you have a table for one such as I?
Fletchyr: Of course, Citizen Dore. Anything for a member of the Revolutionary High Council. Welcome to the Circle of Song. Allow me a moment to clear a table for you.
<While Fletchyr quickly clears a table, several of the guards slowly walk through the room. As Serk Ostromson passes by one of the tables, one of the patrons stands up, clutches his throat and gasps out, “Poison” before collapsing to the ground. Fletchyr motions Dore and his party to sit down and rushes to the fallen man. Jules Motte joins her and the two carry the fallen man into the back room. Madame Fletchyr reappears a moment later.
Fletchyr: My friends and guests, please do not panic. While I must regrettably inform you that we were unable to resuscitate him, the poor man did not die of poison. I assure you that you have nothing to fear from the food, but in order to put your minds at rest, I will have my chefs prepare fresh meals for everyone. If you will kindly bear with us, the staff will remove your plates and refresh your drinks.
Dore : I’m happy you think the matter closed, Madame Fletchyr. But I think it best if the guests all remain here until we get to the bottom of the matter. Cassandra, tell the guards outside that anyone attempting to leave this building before I do is to be immediately arrested. Without exception. That is…acceptable to you, Madame Fletchyr?
Fletcher : Certainly, Citizen Dore. An admirable plan.
Dore : In the meantime, I intend on enjoying this evening. That means for the next few hours my overeager guards will refrain from arresting anyone while they investigate. The rest of you will refrain from unseemly acts of violence for those that cannot abide by such restrictions will get a chance to meet the guillotine in the morning.

Background: The last years have been a whirlwind. Three years ago, you were a common candle maker working in the local bazaar. A man of no status or worth in the noble world of Montaigne. But when a revolution swept across the land and placed the former rulers into pens awaiting execution, you rode the tide of change to power. Your years in the bazaar gave you the voice and confidence to speak to mobs while years of poverty gave you the thirst for riches and power. You quickly rose in prominence until you joined the Revolutionary Council. Now from this place of prominence, you are able to enjoy the fruits of success.
You’ve taken mistresses by the score and savored luxuries, such as feather beds and carriage rides, which you believed lay forever out of your reach. Each time you gain a new prize, the joy lasts for only a few days before you come to accept it as your just due and then you focus your attention on a new prize. About the only constant is your love for the art of gambling, though it lost some of its pleasure when you realized that you don’t really risk anything when you gamble. You can easily afford any of your losses, so there’s no true danger. Still, you’re always happy to play a couple hands.
Your latest obsession is Lady Alexis du Boise. You met her a year before the Revolution, though you doubt she remembers the poor candle maker who sold her candles. Her beauty and poise astounded you then. So, when Anne du Paix approached you with her location, you immediately decided to make Alexis your own. You quickly ordered the arrest of Lady du Boise and her family. The Revolutionary Council quickly sentenced them to death and while her family was executed earlier this evening, you ordered her brought here instead. You met her here rather than escorting her yourself because you’ve never actually attended any of the executions, they are far too barbaric for your tastes. Even with no notice, the restaurant was happy to make room for you. You plan to make her an offer she cannot resist. Become your mistress or face death in the morning. While you realize she may not leap at the offer, you are certain the charm that won over the mobs will convince her of the wisdom of joining you.
A few comments on other characters : Anne bears a striking resemblance to Lady du Boise, however, the difference cannot be clearer. One is crass and obvious while the other possesses sublime grace. Only the true Lady will do. Your guards are constantly interfering with your pleasure, insisting that security and your own safety must take precedence. They just don’t understand that the stress of your position will harm you more than the counter Revolutionaries or those silly Wry Grin fools who keep trying to rescue the victims of change. You must take time to enjoy life. You’ve taken to rotating your guards so none becomes so comfortable in your service that he tries to force you to act against your will. The current head of the guards is Cassandra, though Michael seems to want a promotion. Monique Dupuis is another member of the Revolutionary High Council. The two of you have been at odds frequently. You’re happy to not see her tonight.
Michael Riez – Montaigne male. A dim-witted Revolutionary guard.
Cassandra Gordes – Montaigne female. A dedicated Revolutionary guard, head of your bodyguards.
Zabol Virineia - Ussuran female. A strong mercenary acting as a Revolutionary guard.
Serk Ostromson – Vendel male. An honorable mercenary acting as a Revolutionary guard.
Anne du Paix – Montaigne female. Informant
Alexis du boise – Montaigne female. Noble prisoner
Cecille Ambergris – Montaigne female. Powerful member of the Revolutionary High Council.
Monique Dupuis – Montaigne female. A crafty merchant and member of the Revolutionary High council.
Mission: Seduce Lady Alexis du Boise. Relax and enjoy yourself, regardless of your nagging guards. Play a game of chance.

Background: While some people look down at you as a buffoon, you possess far more power and authority than most realize. As one of the personal guards of the Revolutionary Council, you arrest nobles who once lorded over you and intellectuals who know more stuff than you’ll ever remember. But you’re still not in charge. You’re not in charge of everything like the Council, though you wouldn’t really be any good at that. You’re happy just being a guard. Problem is you‘re not even in charge of Citizen Dore’s guards. That is something you could handle easily enough. But that means you‘re going to need to take Cassandra’s job. She’s Dore’s head guard and she doesn’t like you. She made you get Lady du Boise from the executioner’s block and bring her here. That’s not right. Once they’ve been sentenced, they’re not supposed to walk away. At least her husband and two kids stayed on the executioner’s block.
It reminds you of a patrol you were on a few weeks ago. You’d captured a man with forged papers and arrested him. The man claimed to be a doctor on a mission of mercy to save a woman’s life. You checked on it and the woman’s husband, Charles Brown, confirmed that he was waiting on the doctor and begged you to let the doctor go. You almost arrested him for even suggesting it, but figured it’d be better to let him take care of his wife. So, you marched the doctor to jail. That’s the way the system works. You catch the bad guys, you arrest the bad guys, then you execute the bad guys.
Still Citizen Dore wanted the lady brought here, so you did it. Still wasn’t right though and you didn‘t like it. You wouldn’t have to do jobs you don’t like if you had Cassandra’s job. You’re gonna find out who the dead guy was. Then you’re gonna catch the killer. That will prove you should be head of the guards. While you’re at it, you might check up on Charles Brown and see how his wife is.
Revolutionary Guards : You are a member of the Revolutionary Guard and authorized to check people’s papers and arrest trouble makers or criminals. When checking paperwork, it should include the person’s name, a description of the person, and a proper seal. Most seals are black, indicating this is a normal citizen. Gold seals designate foreign dignitaries who should not be arrested without Council approval. Green seals designate Revolutionary agents who should be treated with every courtesy. Silver seals designate members of the Revolutionary High Council. However Citizen Dore doesn’t want any violence or actual arrests made until the end of the evening. At that point, you may designate anyone you want to arrest and Dore will pass judgement upon them.

Background: The Revolution has been kind to you. Years ago, you were a common street urchin with neither learning nor prospects. That all changed when the common folk realized the evils of the nobles and rose up. You were in the first wave of peasants who overthrew the nobles, striking down the corrupt officials and city watch with thrown cobblestones and bricks. One of the leaders saw your dedication and desire, not to mention your willingness to aggressively pursue the Revolution’s victims. Slowly you rose through the ranks until you became one of the personal guards of Citizen Dore, a high ranking member of the Revolutionary Council. While he doesn’t seem to understand the dangers which surround him, he treats you well. The only problem is you’ve noticed that he tends to rotate through personal guards, probably to ensure none becomes lax in their duties. You know that few are as competent as yourself, so you need to maintain your position here, both for his safety and your own professional pride.
There are two guards in particular you want to keep an eye on. One is Michael Riez. He’s just too dumb for you own good. The other is Richter Mutz. He’s is actually a Revolutionary guard not assigned to Dore’s guards. You’re not sure what he’s doing here tonight, so you want to keep an eye on him.
Perhaps your ally, Johann Kohl, an Eisen scholar you befriended, can prove the other guards are incompetent. Another potential ally you have here tonight is Gerard Muguet, an undercover informant for the Revolution. He might have some useful information to help you keep your position.
Earlier this evening, Citizen Dore ordered Lady du Boise brought here in order to convince her to reveal more traitors to the Revolution. You sent Michael to get her and apparently a few minutes later someone freed the rest of her family moments afterwards before they could be executed. Of course, they’ll be recaptured, but in the meantime, someone may try to break into the restaurant to rescue her as well. You plan to keep an eye out in case someone tries to free Lady du Boise.

Background: Its been so long since you’ve raised your face to the heavens and howled! While Ussurans would understand that was just your way to show your love of life, the Montaigne tend to frown on that sort of thing. You used to lift your voice to the stars and sing along with the rivers and wolves. Matushka gifted you with Pyryem, the ability to speak to animals and to change into animals. But that was long ago and there simply isn’t a whole lot of joy in your life anymore. You left home because even with the blessing of Matushka, the spirit of winter who watches over her people, there simply wasn’t any way to provide a living there. Your greatest asset was your skill with a sword, so you became a mercenary, always following whomever could pay you the most. The money buys seed and food for your family back in Ussura. After years of such work, you’ve lost most of your ability with Pyryem. The only form you still retain is to change into the form of a large black bear.
At first, you thought that the Montaigne Revolution would be different. The people were striving to free themselves from the oppressive rule of their nobles. The same nobles who ordered the Montaigne army to invade Ussura itself. Well, that invasion ended on the snowy hills of your homeland with their defeat. Now the Revolution placed a new group of thugs and cutthroats in power. They don’t truly understand a leader’s obligation to help his people or the freedom that is each man’s right. Still, the pay is good and your position as a personal guard ensures that you spend your time protecting a man, though he is a foolish petty man, instead of arresting children or innocents. It’s the children that get to you the most. You’re starting to realize that the money may not be worth working for this “Revolution.”
Plus, you miss your music. When you heard the waitresses singing earlier, you wanted to join them on-stage and join your voice to theirs. Perhaps you’ll get a chance before the end of the evening. One additional challenge you face is that though the Pyryem you possess is not an accursed blight such as the Montaigne noble’s Porte, it is still considered sorcery and grounds for a death sentence here in Montaigne.
Strangely, although you’ve never been to the Circle of Song, you do recognize someone here. His name is Vito Mercuri, a Vodacce actor you met while serving as a mercenary bodyguard down there. The two of you became fast friends. Perhaps he could help you keep an eye on the crowd to make sure Dore remains safe.

Background: Most think of the Vendel as slight accountants too busy counting their money to get dirty. They think your Vestenmanjavenar cousins possess all the brute strength and weapon skill. Nothing could be further from the truth. You stand over six feet tall and can wield a massive broadsword easily in one hand. Your father was a blacksmith and your mother was a porter, so you’re no stranger to heavy labor, but you chose to dedicate yourself to a different role, that of protector and scourge of those who creep in the shadows. It began when a thief slipped into your father’s forge and murdered him while he slept. When the murderer approached your mother at the funeral and asked to purchase the forge, you grew suspicious and quickly found evidence of his crime. Since then, you’ve dedicated yourself to seeking out and capturing assassins, often before they can strike. Its your way of honoring your father’s memory.
The Revolutionary government hired you to help protect the members of their Council, but so far you’ve found nothing. It’s not that the Council members aren’t in danger, just that so far their opponents haven’t had the patience to strike from the shadows. You seek assassins, not grumbling peasants unhappy because their new government is executing innocent people. You have discovered a handful of the Revolution’s enemies including one who is here tonight, Cedric Prevoye. However, he doesn’t want to murder the Council, in fact, he’s gone out of his way to avoid violence. He simply wanted to rescue an innocent child from execution last week. You can’t argue with the logic that children pose little threat to the Council. So, you’ve chosen to not reveal his existence to Citizen Dore or the rest of the Council, though your testimony would be enough to see him executed. Instead, you’ve sought out the murderers and cut-throats who pose a true threat to your employers.
Word reached you earlier today that someone had targeted Citizen Dore for death by midnight. Not just a thug, but an actual trained assassin. So, you’ve attached yourself to his guards in order to keep a close eye on him. When the assassin strikes, you’ll be ready. You first clue might be the dead man. You should definitely try to find out who killed him. Also, while you don’t work directly for Citizen Dore, you should be careful not to flaunt your position. It can be unhealthy to anger high-ranking Revolutionaries.

Background: You were a simple cobbler once. You made shoes during the day and spent the nights trying to woo a beautiful laundress named Yvette. But she turned you down time and again, claiming that she loved another. The truth was that a nobleman named Claude le Loupe had hired her to clean his clothes, but got far more than merely starched shirts from the deal. Yvette was his mistress, until the Revolution when he tossed her aside. She was happy to accept your attention then, but only so you could help smuggle her out of the country. You knew that she was merely using you, but you loved her and so agreed. You thought that once you’d saved her, she would learn to love you.
But when you arrived in Eisen, she quickly discarded you. She found her noble lover and became his mistress again. Watching her walk away from you the last time, you felt your love turn ice cold. You returned to your homeland and as you entered Charous, you noticed something strange about a hay cart leaving the city. You pointed it out to one of the city guards and when he check the cart, he found two noblemen huddled beneath the straw. The nobles were executed and one of the Revolutionary Council rewarded you himself with a couple coins. As you stared at the money in your hand, you realized that you could punish the nobles who had oppressed your nation for years and reap the rewards at the same time. For the last few months, you’ve worked as a spy for the Revolutionary Council and turned in a number of traitors and nobles, though few know of it. Cassandra, head of Citizen Dore’s guards, is one of those few. While you were not always sure of their guilt, each was given a fair trial and then a merciful execution.
However, tonight may be the culmination of all your work. You’ve heard that an Anti-Revolutionary group is meeting here at the Circle of Song, so you arranged to get into the restaurant for dinner. You’re not sure who they are, what they mean to do or why, but your sources tell you they’re here tonight. Now you just have to find them. You believe Cosette Coteau and Nicolette Tamis might be members, but you have nothing except instinct to go on. Perhaps the best way to find proof is to pose as one of their members. But you’ll have to be patient since the more you discover, the greater your reward.
Strangely, you see a pair of familiar faces here tonight. Yvette’s noble lover Claude are both here. You’re not sure how you feel about seeing him again, but you want to find out what happened to Yvette before you act too precipitously. Especially since you heard someone call him Remy.

Background: You are Castillian, a foreigner to this land, so no one would believe you were a major influence on the growth of the early Revolution. But, it is true. Years ago, you joined a secret society known as Jacob‘s Political Society, dedicated to bettering mankind through the overthrow of corrupt noble societies in favor of allowing individuals to rule themselves. During the early days of the Revolution, as a Castillian, you were able to go many places others could not and as an excellent rider, you were able to quickly spread messages and news from place to place. You worked tirelessly to convince the people to rise up, both because it would benefit the Montaigne people, but also because with their lands in turmoil, the Montaigne army was less inclined to advance into Castille.
Unfortunately, the last month has seen a notable decrease in your enthusiasm for the Revolution. The sorcery-wielding nobles with their brutal disdain for their own people have been thrown from power, but the peasants who rose to replace them are just as corrupt and barbaric. Daily executions of the innocent as well as the guilty, the rise of rabble-rousers and demagogues rather than true leaders and the continued use of thugs as a police force have all convinced you that the Revolution has gone astray. The Folly, a long-time ally of Jacob’s Political Society, has requested a meeting. You’re hoping that they’re going to urge the other members of Jacob’s to stop the bloodshed and embrace a more civil society. The only member of the Folly you’ve ever met was an actress named Anita Calissano.
Just looking at the stupid guards strutting around and Councilmember Dore pawing a prisoner further convince you that you are right. These thugs and idiots wouldn’t know a proper government if they tripped over it. Perhaps if you could urge the guards to commit an atrocity or two to prove to the other members of Jacob’s Political Society that the Revolution must change. You know one other person who might help you as well, a cousin of yours, Sophia del Vasquez Gloyure. She’s a seamstress who is unhappily married to a Montaigne tailor, it is possible that she can help you in your cause, though it would be best if you didn’t let her know what it was all about.
One other note, when you aren’t off fostering a rebellion, you are a Castillian merchant. You own a small ship named the Trucha Carmesi. It isn’t a very fast ship, but she can carry a lot of cargo. Sadly, you had a little altercation in Altamira, so you can’t take cargo there for a while, but anywhere else should be fine.

Background: You were born a simple peasant girl. As a peasant, all you could look forward to was a lifetime stuck in one spot doing back-breaking drudgery in service to the nobles. At first, the navy was no different, except you were able to travel the world while doing it. You began to meet people from every nation, people who showed you that some people in the world lived free. Then one of your fellow crewmates noticed your hunger for freedom and told you about Jacob’s Political Society, a secret society dedicated to bringing freedom to the people of the world. It was the perfect way for you to help your people against the ruthless and brutal nobles who kept them from realizing their full potential.
At sea, you spread rumors among the crew. On land, you whispered tales of abusive nobles and their decadent ways among the landlubbers. When the Revolution swept across Montaigne, you were ready. You mobilized the crews of a dozen ships to rise up against their officers and declare for the Revolution. Then these crews swept into the streets and defeated the few strongholds of resistance. Montaigne was yours! And the first thing you had to do was to bring justice to the poor people of Montaigne. You saw to it that the nobles responsible for the atrocities and outrages of years past were brought to trial. The trials were a bit bloodier than you wished, but you could not fault the people for their anger at their oppressors. Through it all, you’ve kept your own role in all of this secret, to ensure that you could move among the people easily and ferret out the enemies of the Revolution.
Your reward for your work was a ship of your very own, the sloop Callous Whisper. She’s not the best ship on the sea, but she’s yours! Who would have thought that a peasant would rise up to own her own ship? The only problem is that while the Revolution is your passion, it is the Callous Whisper that actually pays the bills. You have enough money to pay off the crew for now, but you’ve got to find a cargo pretty quickly or you’re going to start losing crew. Maybe someone here has a cargo you can take. Normally, shippers as you to pay them a down payment for their goods and then the receiver pays you when you arrive.
As if that wasn’t enough to do, you received word that a group known as the Folly, long-time allies of the Jacob’s Political Society, have requested a meeting. They probably want advise on how to spread the Revolution to Vodacce. The presence of the Revolutionary Councilmember is unfortunate, but you’ll just have to try to keep things quiet. It wouldn’t do to let the Councilmen know that Jacob’s Political Society is actually the ones in control of the mob. Your contact in the Folly is a man named Vito Mercuri, a Vodacce actor.

Background: Your real name is Monique Depuis and you are a member of the Revolutionary High Council. That makes you one of the most powerful people in all of Montaigne. You lived as a struggling merchant until a few years ago when you joined an organization known as Jacob’s Political Society. They were dedicated to bringing about a new day for the Montaigne people and when the Revolution struck, it happened. The years of abuse and neglect by the Montaigne nobles was over and the common people finally had the opportunities they’d long sought. You were at the forefront of the movement, guiding the Revolution into victory, though the Jacob’s largely kept their part in the matter a secret.
Sadly, you can’t create a new order without destroying the old one, so there’s been a lot of turmoil. Rioting in the streets, numerous arrests and constant bickering have been common place, but you believe that things are finally turning around. The only problem is that the people have grown accustomed to their entertainments, in this case, the daily executions of nobility and those who support them. The nobility had to pay for their crimes, but you want to make sure that only the truly guilty pay the ultimate price. Not everyone sees it that way. Some, like Yannick Dore, want to simply keep the executions going while reaping all the benefits of the chaos. That’s why you came here tonight. In order to get away from all the tension and arguments, to just relax. Madame Fletchyr knows who you are, but your disguise is good enough that you doubt most people would recognize you. Then Dore bursts in and sets the whole place to spinning. Still, so long as he behaves, things don’t need to get unpleasant.
There is a few other pieces of business you have to conduct tonight. One is with a Vodacce merchant named Oliver Vraise. He ordered a shipment of lanterns for delivery. You have the receipt for them, so all you need to do is give it to him and he can pick them up anytime. Of course, you also need to get the 300 guilders he owes you for the shipment.
The second is with Jacob’s Political Society. You’d heard there was a meeting scheduled for a few members of the group with another organization from Vodacce. You hadn’t realized they were meeting here, but you see several of your fellow Jacobians here tonight, so this must be the place. You should probably check in with them. Given the need to keep Jacob’s leading role in the Revolution a secret, you haven’t actually met every member of Jacob’s.
The third is the oddest. Cedric, one of the staff, came up to you a few minutes ago and gave you a strange coin. It was gold tinged with red and had a skull on the front. He claimed that one of the Vodacce actresses had sent it over for you. There was something odd about it, but you really couldn’t put your finger on what it was. Then you couldn’t even put your finger on it, because it was gone. You’re not sure what happened to it, but you’d like to find the coin again. They must have given it to you for a reason, right?
Yannick Dore – Montaigne male. A powerful and arrogant member of the Revolutionary High Council.
Madame Antoinette Fletchyr – Montaigne fmale. A beautiful actress and owner of the Circle of Song.
Cedric Prevoye – Montaigne Male. A fiery chef at the Circle of Song.
Oliver Vraise – Montaigne male. A merchant with whom you have an arrangement.
Guiviere Aur – Montaigne female. A passionate sailor and member of Jacob’s.
Cosette Coteau – Montiagne female. A hot-blooded actress at the Circle of Song and member of Jacob’s
Javier de la Cruz – Castillian male. A persuasive merchant.

Item: The sloop Salmones Escarlatas at the city docks, a strange coin
Background: Ever since the Montaigne invaded your country a few years ago, you’ve wanted to find a way to make them pay. You’ve finally discovered the perfect way to do so. Trade them the tackiest junk possible for high quality merchandise. Let them suffer with the stupid trinkets they prize so highly while you provide fine Castillian families with the good they truly deserve. You’ve always managed to find a way to come out ahead, leaving the Montaigne happy with the trades they’ve made and ignorant of how badly you’ve cheated them. You were even able to finally buy your own sloop, the Salmones Escarlatas. Unfortunately, your most recent cargo is a large shipment of fruits and nuts from Castille . You purchased them for a very low price, thinking to unload them here in Montaigne just before the cargo went bad, but it was too late. When you offloaded the cargo into a warehouse, you discovered that it had spoiled.
That means that you don’t have much money right now. People normally pay you when you deliver the cargo, but this one is worthless. Your men are loyal, but they’re not going to remain if they can’t get paid. You have to find another cargo soon or risk losing your men. If possible, you’d still like to get rid of the cargo you have. Perhaps someone is stupid enough to trade you something for it. It really doesn’t matter what at this point. Otherwise, you’re going to have to abandon it in the warehouse. Maybe someone here has a cargo they need shipped. You have a little money on you in case they want a down payment for you to pick up the cargo or maybe they’d take the spoiled shipment as down payment.
However, that’s not your only goal here tonight. You’re also a member of a secret society known as The Folly. They’ve dedicated themselves to humiliating nobles within Vodacce and trying to improve the lot of the common man. Not that you really care. You’re just a member because it often involves moving lucrative cargoes. Eleonora Filin, the leader of the Folly, asked you to be here tonight because they were going to be meeting some other secret group with similar goals. You’re not sure why you care, but here you are.
There’s one other matter as well. Sadly, you have a minor problem. Sometimes you just can’t help yourself from taking things that don’t belong to you. Usually small items, like a pendant or a coin purse. You don’t usually make much money off it, but you just can’t help yourself from doing it. It’s just a touch of kleptomania. That’s all. It struck again tonight. Monique Dechaine, a Montaigne merchant you’ve met in the past, had a strange coin. It is gold, tinged with red, and had a skull on it. You’re not sure why it was so intriguing, but you really thought it looked interesting. Without thinking, you reached out and grabbed it when she wasn’t looking. You know you should just keep it hidden and examine it later, but you can’t help rubbing your thumb along its ridges.

Background: Nobles are a breed apart. It was something that your parents taught you from the moment you were born. You were different, unique, special. While you always maintained that separation, you treated your people well. You even went so far as to provide a small allowance for your illegitimate half-sister, Anne du Paix, the daughter of a washer woman your father took a fancy to one night.
Unfortunately, others of your rank were not so kind. They ignored or abused their serfs for years until the common rabble rose up in rebellion. At first, you tried to simply remain above the fray, certain that your previous kindness would provide a measure of safety to yourself and your family. But the mob cares nothing for such niceties and you were arrested, tried and sentenced to execution. Although you remained strong for your family, you were terrified. You were also furious that someone had turned you in. Your hiding place was ingenious, so you’re certain someone betrayed you, but even at the trial, the name of the traitor was not revealed. You resigned yourself to dying without the answer to this mystery.
Then at the last minute, you were saved from that fate. While your family was marched to their doom, you were taken aside by a guard named Michael and brought here instead. It was wrong to feel such relief when they were still to die, but you couldn’t help it. Then the guards seated you at a table with Yannick Dore, one of the Revolutionary Council jackals and withdrew. You don’t know what is going on, but you must find a way to escape before it is too late.
Of course, you were in for one more surprise. A few moments after sitting down, you saw your husband Jacques alive and well. Though he was pretending that he’d been poisoned. While it was obvious to you that it was simply an act, it seemed to convince the others. So now, you must try to find out what happened to him and the rest of your family (your daughter Camille and your niece Allete).

Background: All your life has been in the shadow of nobility. Your father was Duke du Boise and your mother was a simple washer woman. They shared a few nights of passion and then he cast her aside. The rest of your childhood was utter misery. When Duke du Boise died, you thought your life might improve. Your half-sister, Alexis du Boise, took control of his estates and even met with you. At first, you thought she would offer you the life of which you’d always dreamed, the life of a Montaigne noblewoman. But instead she gave you an allowance, a mere pittance, just enough to keep you from starving. Why you had to settle for cheap Montaigne wine instead of the finest quality Vodaccean! You spent years eking out a meager existence on the edges of Montaigne society, working as a spy and an artist for other men. You even amused yourself once by dressing up as your half-sister, so well that even her husband couldn’t tell the difference. And his testing was most…vigorous.
When the Revolution swept across the land, you realized that this was your opportunity. You could swiftly rise in importance and power as well as enact revenge against the nobles who denied you so much. You had already turned in a dozen of your former patrons when you met Yannick Dore. He was everything you ever wanted : strong, powerful, sure of himself. You decided to get him and your revenge in one stroke. You found where your half-sister was hiding under cover of smuggling her supplies and provided Yannick with the location. He was thrilled, but didn’t seem interested in your offer of companionship. He even told his aide to give you a night here at the Circle of Song as part of your reward. Then you discover him here with her. It isn’t fair. He was supposed to be yours, not hers!
You do have two allies here tonight. The first is another Revolutionary informer named Gerard Muguet. He is far more intense than you are, but that is probably because he doesn’t have any true noble blood like you do. The other is Cosette Coteau. She’s a waitress here at the Circle of Song and favors the Revolution just as you do. Perhaps they can help you assume your rightful place as Dore’s mistress.

Background: You are the daughter of Lady Alexis du Boise, a noblewoman of Montaigne. At least that’s how others see you. Personally, you’ve always seen yourself as a mysterious heroine who can slip past the guards, leap from rooftop to rooftop and deceive anyone with a knowing smile and a toss of your hair. Unfortunately, you’ve never really had the chance as you whirled from garden party to ball. But then the Revolution swept across Montaigne and you realized this wasn’t just a game.
Many of the nobles with whom you’d spent pleasant afternoons now lie dead while peasants run amok in the streets. Your mother had thought all of you could simply hide away at her estate and avoid trouble, but trouble came looking for you instead. Soldiers came to the family estate and arrested you all. After a farce of a trial, you were sentenced to die. Only a few hours ago, you struggled to maintain a brave exterior as they marched you to the guillotine. The fact that the guards had never found two gemstones you’d hidden upon your person gave you hope that they could make mistakes. You’d had four more, but you already used them to try to bribe your way out of the cell.
Then several soldiers (led by the guard Michael you see here) came and took your mother away, probably to execute her in some other, even more hideous manner. For a brief moment, you thought you, your cousin Allete and your father Jacques du Boise would be spared, but the soldiers continued marching you towards the execution. Then a courier and several men came up with a message for the soldiers. They examined it and rushed off on an important mission while the courier said he would escort you the rest of the way. As soon as the soldiers were out of sight, you launched yourself at the courier, but he simply laughed before telling you that he was Cedric Prevoye, a member of a group called the Wry Grin, and he’d come to rescue you.
He rushed you through the streets to this restaurant, telling you that you’d wait a few hours here and then be taken out of the city, but until then he warned you to remain hidden amongst the customers. The last minute rescue thrilled you, but your mother’s arrival at the restaurant was even better. Now you just have to find a way to rescue her and evade detection until the Wry Grin can move you out of town. With you tonight is Allete, your cousin is a silly girl who thought the Revolution was romantic and intriguing, until they arrested her and sentenced her to die. Also here is your father Jacques du Boise who enjoys flirting with danger as much as with other women, though you hadn’t known what thespian skills he possessed until you witnessed his “death”. One of the guards was looking closely at Allete, so he faked his own “death”. Hopefully, he’ll find a way to rejoin you.
There is another familiar face here tonight: your mother’s illegitimate half-sister Anne du Paix. Anne has always been jealous and spiteful, so you know better than to go to her for help.

Background:
The world tilts and changes around you constantly. For years, you have lived within a largely loveless marriage with Alexis du Boise. As a Montaigne noble, you had plenty of opportunity to indulge in affairs and other practices. And you did. When the Revolution swept across Montaigne, everything changed. You saw her in a completely new light. She was strong, compassionate and daring. Everything you’d missed in her for years. You found the woman you’d fallen in love with all over again. Her selflessness even inspired you to sneak out from the hiding spot and spread help where you could by arranging for doctors to visit the ill or delivering food from your estates to the needy.
Then the Revolutionary forces invaded your home and seized you, Alexis, your daughter Camille and your niece Allete. Through the trial and prison, you remained at your wife’s side and gave her support, though you often wondered if you were responsible for the arrest, if the guards had followed you home one night. You didn’t want to die, but you thought at least it would be at the side of a woman you loved. When a guard took her away moments before the execution, you almost despaired.
But an agent of the Wry Grin rushed in and rescued you, posing as a courier distracted the guard and led you here, leaving only your wife in danger. He brought you to this restaurant, stating that they’d get you a change of clothing and lead you out of the city. Then to your surprise, Alexis showed up here as a prisoner of Yannick Dore, one of the Revolutionary Councilmembers. Before you had a chance to free her, one of the guards almost discovered Allete. You didn’t dare risk discovery, so, you did the only thing you could think of. You stood up, clutched your throat and cried out “poison” before collapsing. Thankfully, the restaurant’s owner, was quick on her feet and ordered a couple of her men to drag you out to the kitchen. You’d planned on making your escape then, but something even better happened. An Avalon slipped to your side and touched you. Then he whispered that he’d changed your appearance and a quick glance in a silver tureen revealed that it was true. You recognized him as one of the men for whom you’d arranged medical treatment. The owner of the restaurant, Madame Fletchyr quickly produced another body from within a cupboard and the Avalon transformed him into your likeness. You rose to your feet and mingled with the others coming to examine the body.
No one except the glamour mage and Fletchyr know who you are now. On the one hand, this gives you the perfect opportunity to rescue your wife. Of course, it also gives you the perfect opportunity to have one last fling before fleeing the country. No one will know because you won’t be yourself. The idea is tempting, particularly with your wife almost in the arms of another man. Maybe that’s why she wasn’t to be executed? If she is cheating, why shouldn’t you? Regardless, whether she’s cheating or not, she remains your wife and you must attempt to rescue her if possible.

Background: You have finally seen the truth. For years, you were a spoiled, rich child of noble blood. You spent your days in mindless revelry while others starved and suffered. You focused on trivial matters, stupid habits, and hobbies. When the Revolution swept across Montaigne, your own parents fled for Eisen. Aunt Alexis and Uncle Jacques took you in, but eventually even they couldn’t protect you from the truth. Revolutionary forces found you and arrested all of you (even your cousin Camille). In prison, they showed you the truth, and the pain and suffering you’d caused the Montaigne people. You realized that your punishment, even unto death, was appropriate.
Now, things have changed again. As you were marching for your own execution, a group called the Wry Grin rescued you. They’ve given you a chance to really make things right by joining the Revolution yourself. You can keep your identity secret and help track down the truly corrupt nobles. There are so many who need to answer for their crimes. The trick is you shouldn’t punish the people who made it possible. You must protect the secret of the Wry Grin and your family, even as you work against them.
One thing that did shake your confidence. The Revolutionary Guards arrived a few minutes ago and one of them was looking at you closely. There was something about his eyes and you felt yourself blushing while you grinned back at him. As he approached, your uncle suddenly grabbed his own throat and choked out the word, “Poison.” Then he died. It was tragic, but you know that he was not entirely innocent of abusing his power and position in the past.
Another who has abused his powers in the past is a nobleman named Remy Praisse du Rachetisse. You’re surprised he’s still in Montaigne since his twin brother Claude le Loup fled to Eisen a long time ago. You dated Remy for a while and you know he’d help you out if you needed it, but he’s a good example of what is wrong with nobles. He’s arrogant and casually cruel with no regard for anyone beyond what they can do for him. If you’re going to start a new life with the Revolution, it would be best to have a new man with which to start it. You find your eye seeking out the powerful man you spotted a few minutes ago. You heard someone call him Serk. He’s a mysterious foreigner, but he works for the Revolution. He’s the sort of man you’ve always desired and perhaps now is the time to find a new man to share your new life with.

Background:
Your true name is Remy Praisse du Rachetisse, a Montaigne nobleman of some standing. Unlike some of the other nobles, you always treated your servants and people well, ensuring they had enough slops and bread crusts to survive. You even saw to it that they were gainfully employed in various projects and amusements of your devising, such as recruiting them to take part in games of living chess or cutting down forests to provide a better view from your castle. Still you are a noble of the purest blood and manners, unlike such radicals as Lady Alexis du Boise who insisted on paying those who served her.
Thankfully, you were out of the city when the peasants rose up in a vicious mob and swept aside everything in their path. Even now, months later, the mobs do not control the countryside. You only came here to gather a few possessions you’d left behind. However, the city was far more chaotic than you’d pictured, so you approached the Swordsman Guild and hired a bodyguard named Henri d’Auvergne for the remainder of your stay. You are to meet him here tonight. After finding him, its just a matter of remaining hidden from the Revolutionaries during your stay.
Well, that and perhaps finding a good game of cards. It seems like its been years since you’ve gotten in a good game. In the past, you’d wager gems or lands worth a thousand guilders on a single turn of the cards, but you’d be satisfied just finding someone with whom to play cards.
There are a few familiar faces here tonight. The first is Alexis du Boise, a soft-headed noblewoman who ran afoul of the Revolutionary Guards. You wonder what happened to her husband and daughter? They’ll probably execute all of them. The other is Alexis’ niece Allete. The two of you dated some time back, though you had to let her go when you realized that she was hopelessly fascinated by the lower class. Strange that her aunt is under arrest while she remains at large. Perhaps she can use some help. The thought of a desperate Allete willing to do anything for your aid is certainly appealing.

Background:
Growing up in the streets, you never really had time for games. Staying alive during the Thirty Year War was enough to keep you busy. That life all ended when Father Ehrich Kruger found you passed out from lack of food and took you in. The priest took care of you for several years, feeding you until you’d regained your strength and more importantly he introduced you to the joys of the printed words. You learned how to lose yourself in history and poetry, discovered new thoughts and wider vistas. Even more surprising, you found that you had a talent for conveying your thoughts into inspiring words. You became one of a new breed, a writer for the pamphlets which spread news around the world to anyone and everyone who can read.
It was while creating pamphlets that you met Martina Schwartz, servant to Lady Luffwitz of Eisen. You helped Martina squash a rumor about her employer making an arrangement with a bandit preying on the people of her land. It was actually fairly easy to stop the tales, since you’d been the ones creating the rumors in the first place. She’s always felt that she owed you a debt.
Then you discovered that Father Kruger was dead. The bandit from your stories tried to rob him and Kruger died during the struggle. If Luffwitz had really done her job and caught the thug instead of worrying about her reputation, Father Kruger would still be alive. Somehow, everything in Eisen looked different after that, so you moved here to Montaigne. While you find the turbulence caused by the Revolution abhorrent, it is in times and places such as these where stories happen.
One of your old pieces went over very well when you reprinted it here. A mysterious figure known only as the Phantom slipped into a meeting of corrupt Eisen nobility, cut down their leader and set fire to a small fleet of ships they’d intended to use to invade Avalon. So long as stories include corrupt nobility, the Montaigne seem pretty easy to please.
Your first piece written here was on the identification papers that the Revolutionary government is using. Few people realize that the kind of seal on the document indicates the status of the person. Black is your average citizen while green indicates the bearer is an important Revolutionary agent. Gold is a foreign ambassador and silver is a member of the Revolutionary High Council. You chose to focus your piece on how simple it is to forge these documents, but decided not to distribute it after some pointed questions from some of the guards. Still, it served to teach you how to forge the papers if you ever need to. During your investigations, you met Cassandra, the personal guard of Yannick Dore of the Revolutionary Council. She thinks you’re a simple scholar, so you might be able to learn something useful for one of your stories from her.
You also recognize a few familiar faces. Martina Schwartz and Lady Luffwitz are both here tonight. You’d like to make her pay for Father Kruger’s death, but she’s certain to have some sort of diplomatic immunity. She’d have to blatantly flaunt the laws of this land. Schwartz would never help you set that up. At least not knowingly. The other familiar face is Remy Ganador. The strange thing is that you’ve never actually met him, but you know his twin brother Claude le Loup, a Montaigne noble who fled to Eisen at the start of the Revolution.
Cassandra Gordes – Montaigne female. A dedicated Revolutionary guard, head of Dore’s bodyguards.
Remy Praisse du Rachetisse – Montaigne male. An arrogant nobleman, brother of Claude le Loup
Hildegard Luffwitz – Eisen female. A confident foreign noblewoman.
Martina Schwartz – Eisen female. A loyal servant to Lady Luffwitz.
Ambrose Gloyure – Montaigne male. A friendly tailor. You’ve provided false documentation for him in the past (cost 10 guilders each).
Mission: Come up with a new story for your pamphlets. Make Lady Luffwitz pay.

Background: A stitch in time saves nine. That was what your father always taught you. All you have to do is act early and problems usually diminish substantially. The problem is that the Montaigne nobles didn’t believe this simple wisdom and heaped insults, injuries and abuse upon the Montaigne people until they could not take any more. In response, the Revolution swept across Montaigne in a tide of blood. Now executions of the innocent and brutal thugs on every street corner are the norm. You’ve decided its time to take that small step, to try to cut off the worst of the problem. You joined with Madame Fletchyr, owner of this restaurant, in a group known as the Wry Grin to help free the victims of the Revolution. You don’t know all of the other members, but you’ve helped with a few rescues. Just tonight, you helped arrange the rescue of Lady du Boise’s family from the guillotine. Sadly, the guards escorted her off a few minutes before the rescue though you’re not sure why. Now that she has showed up here, you’ll have to rescue her as well. And all under the nose of the Revolutionary guards!
Unfortunately, you haven’t finished your part of the rescue yet. You need to obtain papers for the du Boise family. You thought there’d be more time before you had to get them out of the city, but that obviously won’t work. Luckily, you noticed Johann Kohl. He’s provided some documentation in the past, so it is just a matter of seeing if he can do the job in these conditions. That and how much will it cost you. Last time, he provided a set of papers for 10 guilders.
However, your biggest problem is your wife, Sophia Gloyure. You’ve only been married a years, but you don’t want her worried about you trying to take on the entire Revolutionary Government, so you’ve decided not to tell her about the Wry Grin. She’s a lovely and intelligent woman, so you’re sure she’s noticed how distracted you’ve been lately. Perhaps it might be best to tell her everything, but not tonight. She’s safer not knowing until you can get the nobles out of here. Maybe the problem with the shop will help. Normally, you both ship the clothing you made to Altamira in Castille via a merchant named Marzipan, but he’s way overdue. The buyer in Altamira pays 100 guilders to the ship’s captain and then sends you the remainder of the money. If you can convince her to find a ship to take it, that might keep her busy while you take care of the Wry Grin’s problems.
Wry Grin : “No man should pay for another’s crimes.” That is the motto of an anti-Revolutionary group who works to rescue innocent nobles from execution. Usually the nobles are first brought to the Grin’s headquarters at the Circle of Song where they change their clothes and then the Grin smuggles them out of the country.
Antoinette Fletchyr – Montaigne fmale. Owner of the Circle of Song and member of the Wry Grin
Cedric Prevoye – Montaigne Male. A fiery chef at the Circle of Song and member of the Wry Grin
Rebecca Bascone – Montaigne female. A lascivious waitress and member of the Wry Grin
Blanche Martise – Montaigne female. A wicked actress at the Circle of Song and member of the Wry Grin
Alexis du Boise – Montaigne female. A proud noblewoman and captive of the Revolutionary High Council.
Camille du Boise – Montaigne female. A young noblewoman, daughter of Alexis du Boise, rescued tonight.
Jacques du Boise – Montaigne male. A talented nobleman. Husband to Alexis du Boise, rescued tonight.
Allete du Boise – Montaigne female. Niece to Alexis du Boise, rescued tonight.
Sophia del Vasquez Gloyure – Castillian female. Your suspicious wife. A dress maker.
Efrain del Guzman – Castillian male. A polished merchant and cousin to Sophia Gloyure.

Background: Something is up. You’re not talking about the Montaigne nobles fleeing the nation in droves or the Revolutionary forces rounding up everyone with even the slightest trace of noble blood and executing them. Those are becoming common place now. You’re actually talking about your husband Ambrose Gloyure. You’ve only been married a year and you’re not certain what’s wrong, but over the last few weeks he’s been acting oddly. Going out at strange times, burning messages, and just generally acting secretive. You think he’s having an affair. If he is, you’re going to make his life miserable, right up until you get him killed. But first you need proof. Perhaps your cousin, Efrain del Guzman can help. He was always really good at sneaky stuff, maybe he can help you figure out what is wrong with your husband.
The other problem you have is that you desperately need money. Normally, you and your husband make clothing for the people of the city, but demand is pretty low. Even with all the splattering blood from the guillotine, people just don’t want to buy clothing. You’ve arranged for shipments of clothing to Altamira, Castille through a Montaigne merchant named Marzipan. But Marzipan is long overdue, so long that you wonder if he’s coming at all. You need to find another ship to take the goods to Altamira, and soon. The buyer in Altamira pays 100 guilders to the ship’s captain and then sends you the remainder of the money. Perhaps your cousin Efrain can help there as well. Normally, your husband would take care of this, but you want to prove to yourself that you can do without him. Just in case your suspicions are correct.
You have a receipt for the shipment to give to the captain. With that he can pick up the cargo and shouldn’t have any problem delivering it. Normally, Marzipan gave you 20 guilders as a down payment, but you’re desperate enough that you forego that.
Mission: Figure out what your husband is up to. Find a ship to take cargo to Altamira

Background: You are one of those rare individuals who possess wits and looks. Both courtier and swordsman abilities come easily to you and you’ve used those skills through the years to amass both fortune and favors. Unfortunately, all the rewards of your hard work went up in smoke with the Revolution. Literally, as some twit of a peasant set your home ablaze while the mobs thronged the streets. Thankfully, you were not a noble or your head would decorate the pikes outside the city by now.
Instead, you find yourself penniless and attempting to attract a new clientele. So far, you’ve found more women interested in your presence in their bed than in your sword arm. However, tonight you were told to meet a man named Remy Ganador who needs a bodyguard. Everything’s been arranged through the Swordsman Guild, so you don’t need to worry about the book keeping. It’s a matter of simply keeping him alive for a few days while he wraps up loose ends. Of course, you must keep your mind on your task, so you’ll need to spurn the advances of anyone who wishes you for…other matters.
Of course, you do have one other means of making money. Some say that the pen is mightier than the sword. You’re not sure about that, but you do wield a pretty mean pen. When you were young, you trained in calligraphy and became quite a skilled forger. You prefer to not rely upon it because a swordsman gets a lot more respect, but you’re desperate enough for money right now that you’re considering it. Strangely, you even recognize one person from back in those days. Jules Motte, the concierge, was a pick pocket back in those days, but he’d probably remember you. Maybe he knows someone who needs papers?
Mission: Find your client and keep him safe. Make some money providing forgeries.

Background: Nobles, regardless of nationality, share more in common with each other than with peasants. So, while you remain comfortable in Avalon and your own people are still respectful and honorable, other nobles are finding a different world as the Montaigne street rabble rise up in bloody revolt. This Revolutionary Government of theirs has already executed scores of nobles: men, women and children with no sign of letting up. While you are not of this land, you are appalled at their actions and resolved to step in. While most think of you as a courtier and a fop, you’re actually the Phantom, a spy for Queen Elaine, using your abilities as a gambler and master of disguise to move in circles where Sir Montgomery would never normally be expected. Some even say that you’ve succeeded in saving all of Avalon with your efforts, though you focus more on the beautiful, and grateful, women you’ve rescued. A good example is a few years ago when you slipped into an Eisen castle, killed the nobleman, rescued the noblewoman he’d kidnapped, the alluring Hildegard Luffwitz, and set fire to the fleet he’d planned on using to invade Avalon. Then the two of you worked to break up a trade alliance between certain Eisen nobles and the Vendel that would have hurt Avalon greatly. But right now, you are going to see about helping the nobles of Montaigne.
Fortunately, a perfect opportunity has already arisen. Lady Alexis du Boise, an honorable and truly noble woman, is being held here. You don’t know her personally, but you’re certain that you can find some way of rescuing her. The only problem is your wife, Clarissa. She spent years here in Charouse before the Revolution and decided to revisit Charouse despite the dangers of the Revolution. You immediately offered to accompany her, just in case she gets into trouble, and then arranged to meet your other companions, Lady Luffwitz and the thuggish Lord O’Connell, here. Clarissa doesn’t know that you’re anything more than a fop and you’d prefer to keep it that way. While you love her, she’s a rather simple-minded woman and you don’t really want her worrying or exposing your true identity by accident.
You have two other assets at your disposal tonight. The first is that you own the Scarlet Sturgeon, a sloop within which you sailed over from Avalon. She’s a small ship, but with a remarkably large amount of cargo space, a trait you’ve exploited in the past on daring missions. Your second asset is your own skill at cards. While you usually claim no more than a passing awareness of how to play, you’ve won thousands of guilders from a single turn of the cards in the past.
Lady Clarissa Montgomery – Avalon female. An impetuous foreign noblewoman. Wife to Lord Terrance.

Background: This trip is a nice change of pace for you. While you spent several years of your youth exploring the Montaigne courts, you returned home long before the recent unpleasantness. Back in Avalon, you met and married your husband, Terrance. Since then, you’ve spent spend most of your time at the Avalon court or at your husband’s estates. Even so, you see very little of Terrance since he’s always so busy. You’ve never really been sure what it is that he’s so busy with. He’s just a courtier with no responsibilities, but he sure does travel extensively. You’ve always loved to travel as well, but rather than accompanying Terrance on one of his boring trips, you decided to visit Charouse as you did in your youth.
When your husband found out that you were coming here, he said he’d be happy to join you. In fact, he even sailed you across in his ship, the Scarlet Sturgeon.. The thought of showing him around Charouse made you grin, especially to the Circle of Song. You loved the singing and acting that went on there last time and you even dreamed of performing yourself. The fact that Terrance immediately set up a meeting with few other nobles seemed odd to you. Particularly since he kept sharing long looks with Hildegard Luffwitz. You’re certain something is up, but you don’t know what.
Oh, and you need to pick up your shawl. Earlier today, you stopped by a dressmaker’s shop that you remembered. A Castillian woman named Sophia had a lovely shawl, but needed a few more hours to finish it. You arranged to meet her here tonight to pick it up. You still owe her a four guilders for it. You noticed her snarling at her husband as well, so she might be a kindred spirit to discuss the failings of husbands.
While you are not a professional performer, you’ve always enjoyed taking center stage with dramatic readings and skits. Perhaps you could perform here tonight. One of your favorites pieces is the monologue that Lady Dekker gives while her nemesis died after saving Dekker’s life.
“I don’t know why he saved my life. Maybe in those last moments he loved life more than he ever had before. Not just his life, anybody’s life, my life. All he’d wanted were the same answers the rest of us want. Where did I come from? Where am I going? How long have I got? All I could do was site there and watch him die.”

Background: You know that wits and subtlety are not your strong points. You are blunt and plain-spoken, so you‘ve made it your rule to avoid any time within the Queen‘s court in Avalon. Truth be told, you normally avoid delicate situations completely, leaving them to your partner Terry Montgomery. He’s the one who waltzes through foreign courts, slips through dens of iniquity and emerges with the damsel in distress or the vital information. All in the name of advancing the welfare of Queen Elaine and Avalon.
Meanwhile, you tend to matters such as providing alibis, horses for quick get aways and distractions. You’ve mastered the tactic of telling long boring tales with no point while he slips past the guards. The fact that you’re a trained doctor has also come in handy more times than you care to recount. Terry has this annoying habit of being stabbed, shot and beaten with alarming frequency. All in the name of maintaining his cover as a complete dandy.
The plan for tonight is to work out precisely who you are to rescue and how to do so. It’ll require all your skills, but it’ll be Terry’s planning that will make it all work. You just have to remember to watch what you say. Not just because of outsiders and enemy agents, but also Terry’s own wife who is joining you for dinner. She knows nothing of his life as a secret spy and you need to keep it that way.
Strangely, you do recognize a familiar face here. Vinchenzo Pedrini is a Vodacce actor you met a while ago. You’d traveled down to Vodacce in search of some more advanced medical texts when a young actor staggered out of an alleyway. He’d been attacked and badly wounded. So, you treated him, which apparently took him by surprise. Seems noble Vodacce would enver bother to dirty their hands with a wounded commoner. You should see how he is doing.

Background: You are a proud noblewoman from Eisen, though many of your lands were long lost during the war. Eisen was once the greatest power in Theah, until religious differences ripped the nation apart. Thirty years of civil war failed to unite her again, but it did exhaust the Eisen people and shatter its power. While you are proud of your Objectionist faith, you focus more on your noble Eisen blood. Which is why it was so difficult for you to work with Lord Terrance Montgomery of Avalon. You met him when he rescued you from a villainous Eisen noble who’d kidnapped you and planned on invading Avalon. Montgomery set you free and then worked to support Eisen against a group of Vendel merchants. It seems that Queen Elaine wanted to ensure your homeland was not dominated by Vendel.
You haven’t mentioned to him that you were actually working in League with the Vendel. It isn’t that you were trying to hurt your people, but your lands drastically need supplies to help recover from the War and the Vendel are paying the highest prices. Now that the Vendel have been disrupted, there’s no particular concern over it. Though, you did spot an interesting face tonight. Among the Vodacce performers is an Avalon woman named Samantha Morgan. The Vendel sent her south to spy upon the Vodacce. You’re not sure what she’s doing here tonight, but you need to make sure she doesn’t blow your chances with Terrance by mentioning the Vendel. Maybe she even has some interesting information.
When he mentioned that he would be going to Montaigne next to aid the beleaguered nobles there, you told him you would aid him. You didn’t tell him that one of the reasons you did so was that you wanted to spend more time with the dynamic and handsome man. If he’d mentioned that his wife would be here, you might have reconsidered. Having met the woman you are not impressed. Terrance could do much better with another woman. A woman like you. Of course, if you hadn’t come tonight, you wouldn’t have seen Lady Alexis du Boise being held captive by that pathetic Revolutionary Council. The sight of such a proud and noble woman held prisoner as you once were disgusts you. Terrance probably hadn’t planned on moving so precipitously, but you mean to see her free this night, no matter what the cost.
You brought your maid Martina Schwartz with you. She’s a maid in your service, though you’ve trained her to handle other roles including your secretary and aide. She’s served you for years, so you thought a nice night out would be pleasant for her. Well, that and to make sure that there was someone on hand to deal with any low class matters that needed tending.

Background: Your family has served the Luffwitzes for generations. You grandmother served them, your mother served them and now you serve them. You vowed to serve and uphold her with your very life. No mere maid, you’ve acted as Lady Luffwitz’s adjunct, assistant and companion for years, though she still thinks of you as just the woman who carries her luggage and cleans her room. Like the other Eisen nobles, she cares more for religious trivia and senseless violence than seeing to the well-being of her subjects.
That’s why you were so excited to come here. When the Revolution overwhelmed Montaigne, nobles were thrown from power and servants, farmers and peasants rose to prominence. You mean to learn how the Revolution was organized and bring that secret back to your own lands. Once you do so, you mean to see that the other nobles are handled the way they deserve, with a long drop and a sudden stop. But you cannot betray Luffwitz, your personal honor is at stake.
Stilll, you’re not sure why Lady Luffwitz came to Montaigne. She vanished for a few weeks and returned with Lord Montgomery. You assumed Lady Luffwitz had met him for some sort of tryst. Disgraceful given that he’s married to someone else, but why would a noble care for something like morality?
You were surprised to see two familiar faces here tonight. Johann Kohl is an Eisen printer who creates pamphlets about current events. He helped you squash some terrible rumors about Lady Luffwitz being involved with a bandit who was preying upon her people, a few years ago. You acted swiftly, so Lady Luffwitz never even heard about the rumors. You’re not sure why he’s here, but it might be time to pay off your debt to him.
The second face is far less pleasant. Blanche Martise, a Montiagne actress. You were checking on some of Lady Luffwitz’s properties when you met her. The weather was terrible and you spent three days trapped within an isolated inn with her. The woman is a complete slut. She threw herself at every man that came within her sight and constantly pestered people for attention. You tried to point out the correct etiquette to her on a number of occasions, but she just got snippy and then when the weather finally broke, she sabotaged your saddle so you fell to the ground when it was time to leave. You’d love to find a way to make her pay for humiliating and tormenting you.

Background: Tonight could have gone better. Years ago, you and your husband created this restaurant, the Circle of Song, in the hopes of providing excellent food and entertainment. Every member of the staff must be an entertainer of some sort. But then, he died while forming the Wry Grin, a counter-Revolutionary group dedicated to the premise that “No one should suffer for someone else’s crimes.” You pledged to continue both of his dreams alive, but tonight they seem destined to crash together.
Your agents were to rescue Lady Alexis du Boise and her family from execution, but a last minute change of plans kept you from reaching her. They spirited out the rest of the family and brought them here for a quick change of clothes, but before they could leave, a member of the Revolutionary Council arrived with Lady du Boise in tow and demanding a table. Dore is an arrogant ass who believes he is the law. Sadly, he’s mostly right. Those who refuse the Council routinely find themselves scheduled for the next execution, so you acquiesced. So now, you’ve got to work out how to rescue Lady du Boise while keeping the rest of your family and the Wry Grin’s involvement secret.
In addition, there is a troupe of arrogant actors from Vodacce here making snide comments about your staff’s lack of skill. Perhaps a challenge between the actors and the Circle of Song would serve as a distraction. In the category of unusual guests, Monique Dupuis is here tonight, though she‘s using the name Monique Dechaine. Like Dore, she is a member of the Revolutionary High Council. She might even be able to keep him from killing everyone here on a whim if it comes to that.
You have one last trick up your sleeve. It is a secret door at the back of the restaurant, behind a stove. You’ll be able to escape out past the guards, but it takes so long to open and shut it that it isn’t very feasible to use it while people are here. However, with the proper distraction, you might open it and get as many people out as possible. You’ve decided to try it at exactly 11:10. That should be a few minutes before Dore decides to end the evening with a mass arrest. Your only hope is to have travel paperwork for everyone and a ship arranged.
Circle of Song : You own the Circle of Song, a restaurant where all the staff are also entertainers.

Background: Injustice, poor food and lousy entertainment. Only a few years ago, those were the trio of problems facing Montaigne. Even the finest restaurants served abysmal meals, and the singers and actors of the city were even worse. That was when a friend of yours named Adrian Fletchyer came up with the idea for the Circle of Song, a fine quality restaurant where even the lowliest waiter must sing while he serves supper. You were fortunate enough to gain a place as a chef here and then discovered the place’s other secret. Adrian had founded a group known as the Wry Grin, dedicated to rescuing nobles from execution among the turbulent times of the Revolution. When he gave his life to rescue an important noblewoman, you volunteered to help with that as well and joined both the Circle of Song and the Wry Grin. Earlier tonight, the Grin tried to rescue Lady du Boise and her family from execution. You showed up with false papers and claimed to be an important Revolutionary Guard courier requesting aid from the guards. They ran off to attend to the falsified alarm while you escorted the du Boise family here instead of the guillotine. Sadly, another guard had arrived a few minutes before you and taken Lady du Boise away. Still, you did rescue her husband Jacques, her daughter Camille and her niece Allete. Before you could smuggle them out of the building, the Lady and her captor, the Revolutionary Council Member Dore, arrived for dinner. You must find a way to get both Lady du Boise and her family out of the city.
There’s one other silly task you need to work on as well. Veronica Corradin, ne of the actresses from the Theatre of Folly, asked you to bring a strange coin over to one of the other guests. You thought she’d intended it for a woman named Monique Dechaine who accepted it, but didn’t have any idea why she’d been given it. Thinking back, you realized that she actually meant it for Henri d’Auvergne, the man sitting behind Dechaine. You’ll have to find a way to get the coin back and deliver it to the correct person.
Circle of Song : You work at the Circle of Song, a restaurant where all the staff are entertainers who perform for the guests. There is a friendly rivalry between you and the visiting Theatre of Folly and you would like to out-perform them.

Background: Life is a pocket waiting to be picked. Not that you think that way anymore. It’s been a long time since you were a pickpocket working the streets. You found a much better way to make money. You joined the police. You’ve worked this angle for a while. Convincing shop owners that it is in their best interest to look the other way while you take a few items. Accepting bribes from criminals who just want to avoid capture for a few more days. Pressuring the REAL pickpockets that they’d better cut you in on the action.
When you moved to Montaigne a few years ago, you were able to immediately start your “business” back up. You started small, with a pickpocket named Jules Motte. You haven’t seen him in any of his normal spots for quite a while. Oddly, now he’s working as a concierge here. You’re not sure how exactly a pickpocket gets such a good job, but you’re certain he’s making a ton of money off lifting a few items from the well-to-do guests. You convinced him into letting you in the restaurant for free, but he’s going to have to do far better than that if he wants to make sure his employer never finds out what he’s doing.
Another of your sources of income was a forger named Rachel Echine. She’d been falsifying documents for years, but you were the one to catch her. After that, it became a simple matter of letting her know that if she didn’t pay you a regular stipend, you’d make sure she got to experience Montaigne justice first hand. She vanished a month ago, but she’s here tonight. Time for her to catch up on her payments. Fifty guilders should work.
Another very profitable side-line you’ve worked for quite some time involves checking paperwork. You generally encourage the other Revolutionary Guards to allow you to check all the paperwork. Most find it tedious, so there’s usually not difficult. Then while you examine documents, you quietly inform those whose papers are out of order that a small gratuity will suffice as a substitute. In rare cases where the documentation is in order, but you know that the person is obviously up to no good, you have even resorted to stealing their documentation or threatening to destroy it.
The biggest problem you have is that not all Revolutionary Guards are quite so enterprising. In face, technically, what you are doing is illegal. So, if any of the other guards catch you, you could be in grave danger. In particular, you must be careful about Cassandra Gordes. She’s the head of Revolutionary High Councilman Yannick Dore and wouldn’t take kindly to your activities.
Yannick Dore – Montaigne male. A powerful and arrogant member of the Revolutionary High Council.
Michael Riez – Montaigne male. A dim-witted Revolutionary guard.
Cassandra Gordes – Montaigne female. A dedicated Revolutionary guard, head of Dore’s bodyguards.
Zabol Virineia - Ussuran female. A strong mercenary acting as a Revolutionary guard.
Serk Ostromson – Vendel male. An honorable mercenary acting as a Revolutionary guard

Background: It takes a thief to catch a thief. At least that’s how the old saying goes and you believe it because your main duty here is to prevent beggars, thieves and forgers from operating within the Circle of Song. You recognize many of them from your days on the street when you yourself were counted as a fine pick-pocket. Your life changed when you tried to pick the pocket of a Montaigne actress named Antoinette who ran a restaurant. She caught you and invited you back for a bite to eat. Then she offered you a job if you vowed to leave your life of petty crime behind you. Tired of struggling to survive, you agreed and you’ve worked here ever since. At first, you were somewhat embarrassed to be the only employee who did not perform for the crowds, but you discovered a talent for short soliloquies and managed to avoid humiliating yourself. Now, though you do miss the occasional thrill of outwitting the authorities, you take great pride in your new “family”. Which just makes you fume even more that a group of sneering Vodacce actors has come into your restaurant. They seem to think they are so superior and it makes you want to shove something down their throats. Perhaps you could challenge the troupe of the Theater of Folly to a performing contest?
Of course, the first step to keeping them from operating within the Circle of Song is to recognize them. Strangely, you recognized one here tonight. Henri d’Auvergne operated as a forger when you were a pick pocket. You doubt he even recognized you and as long as he doesn’t try to do any forgeries here, you’re willing to leave him alone. Even the hint of illegal activity in here could spell ruin for the restaurant.
You have another situation. You’re not sure if it is a problem or not. Richter Mutz, a disreputable member of the Guard, is here. He began threatening you when you were a pick pocket, stating that if you didn’t pay him regularly, he’d make sure you were arrested. He showed up here tonight and demanded entrance. Fletchyr told you to always let the Guard in, to avoid trouble, so you did. He might plan to threaten to tell Fletchyr about your past in order to get more money. Of course, she knows about your past, so the threat isn’t worth much.
You’re still proud of the role you played as the old beggar in the Buttercup Bride, a recent production here at the restaurant. Your primary speech was : “ Boo. Boo. Boo. You had true love in your hands, and you gave it up. Your true love lives. And you marry another. True love saved you from the Fire Swamp, and you treated it like garbage. And that’s what you are. The Queen of Refuse. So bow down to her if you want. Bow to her. Bow to the Queen of Slime. The Queen of Filth, the Queen of Putrescence. Boo. Boo. Rubbish. Filth Slime. Muck. Boo. Boo. Boo.”
Circle of Song : You work at the Circle of Song, a restaurant where all the staff are entertainers who perform for the guests. There is a friendly rivalry between you and the visiting Theatre of Folly and you would like to out-perform them.

Mission: Prove the Circle of Song is better than the troupe of Vodacce actors. Make sure no thieves, forgers or other criminals operate within the restaurant. Keep an eye on Henri d’Auvergne. Figure out how to handle Richter Mutz.

Background: If its not one thing, its another. When you aren’t busy waiting tables or performing here at the Circle of Song, you are helping the Wry Grin, an anti-Revolutionary group, rescue nobles from execution and smuggle them out of the area. You have little interest in planning these missions or slipping through the streets. You’re strictly a distraction, keeping the guards busy while the others free the prisoners.
When you’re not busy with such illegal activities, you’re spending evenings with one or another of your gentleman callers. You pride yourself on your ability to have any man you want. Luckily, you encounter enough men here that you can choose the ones you want carefully, and you’re only interested in good looking and rich men. Such as Lord Montgomery, a visiting Avalon noble. His wife is with him, but that just means you are going to need to display a little discretion and a lot of skill. Or is it the other way around?
Wry Grin : “No man should pay for another’s crimes.” That is the motto of an anti-Revolutionary group who works to rescue innocent nobles from execution. Usually the nobles are first brought to the Grin’s headquarters at the Circle of Song where they change their clothes and then the Grin smuggles them out of the country.
Performing contest : to take part in this contest, you must sing a song, do a dance or perform a small soliloquy such as the one listed below. At the end of the night, the crowd will decide which group, the Circle of Song (contemporary) or the Theater of Folly (classical), has the better performers.
Your favorite soliloquy is from a recent play called The Man of Sand. : I can believe anything. You have no idea what I can believe. I can believe things that are true and I can believe things that are not true and I can believe things where nobody knows if they’re true or not. I believe people are perfectible, that knowledge is infinite and that all men are just overgrown boys with deep problems communicating. I believe that all politicians do their best, that all politicians are crooks, and that they’re still better than the alternative. I believe that candy really did taste better when I was a child and that anyone who says sex is overrated just hasn’t done it properly I believe that anyone who claims to know what is going on will lie about the little things too. I believe in absolute honesty and sensible social lies. I believe that life is a game, that life is a cruel joke, and that life is what happens when you’re alive and that you might as well lie back and enjoy it.

Background: You’re not really evil, you’re just really good at pretending. Every play has to have a villainess, and you play them perfectly. From the sneering lip and the disdainful smile, you’ve played the evil seductress, the evil noblewoman, the evil hag and every other eviless known in the theatre. You actually find it relatively easy to play these parts. You simply remember back to the days when the Revolution swept across Montaigne. You watched rabble-rousers and power-hungry tyrants urging merchants and peasants to burn, pillage and murder innocent men, women and children. You saw servants tortured for not revealing where their masters had fled and guards beaten for doing their duties to the noble masters. The mere thought of the crimes the Revolution has perpetuated makes you want to murder the leaders yourself. But, the truth is that you are not an evil person. So, instead of turning to violence, you joined a group dedicated to fighting the Revolution. The Wry Grin uses their wits and panache to defeat the Revolution, making them look ridiculous as you steal many of their victims out from under their noses. Typically, you pretend to be a member and supporter of the Revolution, using all of your acting skills to pretend to enjoy the brutality and barbarity so you can spy and distract the true agents. Unfortunately, tonight’s plan didn’t go so well. The Wry Grin managed to rescue the Lady du Boise’s family from the guillotine, but not the Lady herself. Even worse, Council member Dore brought her here before you could get her family out of the restaurant. Now, you’ve got to find a way to smuggle them out before its too late. But the streets are too dangerous. You’re going to need to get some new documentation for them and help them hide out here until the Councilmember leaves. Maybe Jules knows of a decent forger here tonight.
There’s one more familiar face here tonight, but not one you expected: Martina Schwartz, an Eisen servant. You were touring Eisen with a traveling show when you met her. The weather was terrible and you spent three days trapped within an isolated inn with her. The woman is a complete shrew. She threw nasty comments and insults at you for days. So when it was time to leave, you took a few extra minutes to cut through the belly strap of her saddle and placed a large burr under her saddle. As soon as she mounted, the horse began bucking, the strap broke and she tumbled to the ground. Just because you’re not completely evil, doesn’t mean you’re not a little bad.
If you have to perform tonight, one of your favorite pieces is a soliloquy by Countess Rugan from the Prince’s Bride as she prepares to torture the hero. “Beautiful isn’t it? It took me half a lifetime to invent it. I’m sure you’ve discovered my deep and abiding interest in pain. Presently I’m writing the definitive work on the subject, so I want you to be totally honest with me on how the machines makes you feel. This being our first try, I’ll use the lowest setting. As you know, the concept of the suction pump is centuries old. Really, that’s all this is, except instead of sucking water, I’m sucking life. I’ve just sucked one year of your life away. I might one day go as high as five, but I really don’t know what that would do to you. So let’s just start with what we have. What did this do to you? Tell me. And remember, this is for posterity, so be honest. How do you feel?”
Wry Grin : “No man should pay for another’s crimes.” That is the motto of an anti-Revolutionary group who works to rescue innocent nobles from execution. Background: There’s more depth to you than appears at first glance. You were a skilled actress who came to Charouse in pursuit of glory. Unfortunately, the only job you were able to obtain so far was here at the Circle of Song as a waitress/performer. Or at least, that’s what your co-workers think. In truth, while you are a skilled actress, you’re also a member of Jacob‘s Political Society, a group dedicated to bringing power and authority to the common folk. You were active in the early days of the Revolution, organizing crowds into blood-thirsty mobs, focusing their anger and urging them forward. Few suspected an actress of being one of the people urging the Revolution forward. But the work of the Revolution was important enough for the subterfuge. You’ve managed to destroy the noble bloodlines, wiping out the corrupt officials and those that oppressed the people. You joined the Circle of Song in order to support your cover, but also because it makes meeting with important people simple to arrange. For example, another revolutionary group known as the Folly from Vodacce is to meet you and others from Jacob’s tonight. You don’t know any of them or what they want. Of course, if you could also prove yourself the best actress in the room, well that would just be icing on your cake.
There is one other surprise for you tonight. Monique Dechaine is here tonight. Few people would know her since she doesn’t really exist. Dechaine is a disguise that Revolutionary High Council member Monique Dupuis assumes when she wants to relax away from the rigors of ruling the nation. She is another member of Jacob’s Political Society, but you don’t know if she was invited to the meeting tonight.
If called upon, your favorite piece for performing is a speech from the Prince’s Bride. “My father was slaughtered by a six-fingered man. He was a great sword maker, my father. When the six-fingered man appeared and requested a special sword, my father took the job. He slaved a year before it was done. The six-fingered man returned and demanded it, but at one-tenth his promised price. My father refused. Without a work, the six-fingered man slashed him through the heart. I loved my father. So naturally, I challenged his murderer to a duel. I failed. The six-fingered man left me alive, but he gave me these. [Strokes the scars on his cheeks] I was only eleven years old at the time. When I was strong enough, I dedicated my life to the study of fencing. So the next time we meet, I will not fail. I will go up to the six-fingered man and say, ‘Hello. My name is Consuela Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die.’”

Background: Despite the Castillian-Montaigne War that recently ended, you’ve always found the Montaigne people a generous and friendly people. True, some of the nobles were a bit too proud of themselves and abused their people, but that’s somewhat true of all nobles. You never had any serious problems with them, so when the Revolution swept across the city, you were more interested in keeping out of the way than in revenge. Even now, you really couldn’t care less about politics. You are far more interested in pursuing your career in acting. Something that you decided, you just couldn’t do in your native lands. It seemed that everyone back home was either an Inquisitor seeking heretics to burn at the stake or a masked vigilante trying to rescue everyone. It was just too strange, so you came here and found a position at the Circle of Song. Still, your heart is that of a Castillian, brave and passionate. So when you saw one of the most gorgeous woman in recent memory, you decided that she must be yours. She is a Avalon noblewoman and you overheard her name is Lady Clarissa. There is also a group of Vodacce actors visiting tonight. While you enjoy the Circle of Song, you would prefer a position as a true actor instead of being an actor and a waiter.
Performing contest : to take part in this contest, you must sing a song, do a dance or perform a small soliloquy such as the one listed below. At the end of the night, the crowd will decide which group, the Circle of Song (contemporary) or the Theater of Folly (classical), has the better performers.
One of your favorite pieces was the finale of a recent play about the Castillian masked vigilante, El Vago. The piece comes at the end of the play where he is telling a bedtime story to his young son and his wife walks in. “And so it was. Lightning split the sky, thunder shook the earth, and then all was quiet. The great warrior known as El Vago was gone. The people of the land gave him a hero’s funeral, the largest anyone had ever seen. They came from far and wide to say farewell to their brave and noble champion. But don’t worry, dear Castille. Whenever great deeds are remembered, El Vago will live on. For there will always be a hero. And some day, when he’s needed, we will see him again…on his fearsome steed Tornado, riding like the wind, his sword blazing in the sun…leaping, jumping, swinging through the air…fighting like a lion. Fighting like a tiger. Fighting…as safely as possible.”

Background: There’s more to life than food and a place to live. Years in Eisen taught you that. The devastated lands offer no nourishment to the soul or the heart. That’s why you decided that you had to leave for someplace more vibrant and Montaigne is definitely vibrant. The crops are bountiful, the weather is mild and the men are so pretty. However, the cities are caught up in chaos and disorder. You’ve seen men, women and children butchered for having noble blood. Noble blood! As if that was some sort of crime. You’ve seen merchants and clerks parading around as if they were generals while thugs march to their orders. It is enough to make your blood boil. They have no idea how a real martial ordered society, like Eisen, actually works. Still, you’ve just an actress trying to make her way. One benefit to working here in the Circle of Song is that you get a chance to mingle with so many different types of people. It’s going to come in very handy when you write your memoirs. Maybe you’ll call it, “Reflections of the Pretty People.” Anyway, to make sure you have enough information for the memoirs, you try to ask as many questions as you can. Not just things like their names, country of origin and occupation, no, no. You need to know things like their favorite color and love of their life.
Ah, love. One of your favorite things. You love helping make love’s little matches come out right. So when you see two people who deserve each other, you’re always certain to give it a little help. You’ve already spotted a few couples that belong together. A pair of actors from the Vodacce troups: Veronica Corradin and Carlo Naticelli as well as an Avalon named Charles Brown and his date Lydia Gabryion.
You do recognize someone particularly interesting here: Johan Kohl. Back home he published pamphlets with information about current events and astounding tales. His writing helped convince you that you should become a writer too. You’d love to see if he has any hints or tips for an upcoming author.
While you‘d love to do touching, romantic speeches, as an Eisen, you‘re always typecast in more martial roles. The one you‘re actually fondest of is from the play Seven Soldiers and talks about bravery. Every time you say it, it just sends goosebumps up and down your arms. “Don’t you ever say that again about your fathers, because they are not cowards. You think I am brave because I carry a gun; well your fathers are much braver because they carry responsibility, for you, your brothers, your sisters and your mothers. And this responsibility is like a big rock that weighs a ton. It bends and it twists them until finally it buries them under the ground. And there’s nobody says they have to do this. They do it because they love you, and because they want to. I have never had this kind of courage. Running a farm, working like a mule every day with no guarantee anything will ever come of it. This is bravery.”

Background: Once you were a noble of the purest blood, a paragon of grace and fashion. But that was last month. Now, you’re just a wretched slop boy hunted by the Revolution and if they find you, you will die. It’s that simple. You could have left the country like so many of the other nobles have, but this is your home. You can’t leave without a fight. So when Madame Fletchyr saved you, you vowed to help her save as many of the others as you could. For now, you serve as just a slop boy, taking care of the filth and leftovers for the Circle of Song. But once they’ve taught you a bit more about blending into the other servants, you are going to help spy and plot with the others. You’re going to save the nobles because that’s what’s right. You know Madame Fletchyr is going to try to rescue some of the nobles who are here in secret tonight. You’ve got to find a way to convince her that you can help.
And tonight might be the perfect time. While she probably won’t recognize you in your disguise, you know Camille du Boise, one of the women that the Wry Grin rescued tonight. She’s extremely cute and you’ve considered asking her out in the past, but you were too shy. That was a common problem you had when dressed in finery and faced with all the elegant people in court. Strangely, being dressed in garbage turns out to be a perfect cure for your shyness. You haven’t stuttered since your rescue.
You’re actually a pretty good actor too. You’ve spent hours watching the others give small plays, sing and dance. You know you could perform as well as any of them too. But there’s a problem. Your accent is too upper-class. If you perform, they might pick up that you’re no common street urchin. If you do wind up having to perform, your favorite piece is “All the world’s a stage, and all the men and women merely players; they have their exits and their entrances; and one man in his time plays many parts, his acts being sixth ages. At first the infant, mewling and puking in the nurse’s arms; then the whining school-boy, with his satchel and shining morning face, creeping like snail unwillingly to school. And then the lover, sighing like furnace, with a woeful ballad made to his mistress’ eyebrow. Then a soldier, full of strange oaths, jealous in honor, sudden and quick in quarrel, seeking the bubble reputation even in the cannon’s mouth. And then the justice, in fair round belly, full of wise saws and modern instances. Last scene of all, that ends this strange eventful history, is second childishness and mere oblivion; sans teeth, sans eyes, sans taste, sans everything.”
Wry Grin : “No man should pay for another’s crimes.” That is the motto of an anti-Revolutionary group who works to rescue innocent nobles from execution. Background: You’ve always believed that skills trounce natural ability every time. But while your skills as an actress and an amateur historian are unmatched, you’ve always been a bit shy in private with men. Its something you’ve striven to overcome, but it still hounds you. You thought that by becoming an actress in the Theatre of Folly, you could learn to speak more clearly. And if you are speaking to a group of actors and investors, you can discuss intricate matters for hours, but get you alone with a handsome fellow and you find it difficult to string a coherent sentence together.
Tonight, though, you’ve decided to overcome that deficiency and you’ve spotted just the man for the task: Montaigne Swordsman named Henri d’Auvergne. He looks confident and friendly. Plus, you’re in a foreign country, so even should you make an absolute fool of yourself, no one back home will ever know. At least that was your plan, but now you’re not so sure. It is odd. You had a strange coin that you picked up at a knick-knack shop this morning. It was a gold coin tinged red with a skull on the front. While you held it, you seemed more confident, more sure of yourself. For some reason, you asked Cedric, one of the staff here, to bring it over to Master d’Auvergne. It just seemed the thing to do. But now you find yourself too shy to approach him. Maybe if you can get the coin back…
Outside of this minor project, you are an excellent actress in the Theatre of Folly. Despite the name, the troupe is a serious endeavor with a tendency towards classical comedies. You’re proud to be a member, so when you heard one of the other guests saying that the Circle of Song had some of the finest actresses in the world, you immediately wanted to prove him wrong. Should you need help with anything tonight, you know you can count on Vinchenzo Pedrini, one of the Theatre of Folly troupe. He’s always been a dear friend and has often helped you in the past.
Performing contest : to take part in this contest, you must sing a song, do a dance or perform a small soliloquy such as the one listed below. At the end of the night, the crowd will decide which group, the Circle of Song (contemporary) or the Theater of Folly (classical), has the better performers.
One of your favorite pieces is the speech of Henrietta Vespuci from Henrietta III. She was a rare noblewoman who possessed both the strength and capacity to rule. Its taken from a scene just before the climactic battle which took place on St. Crispin‘s Day. “If we are marked to die, we are enough to do our country loss; and if to live, the fewer men, the greater share of honor. Theus’ will! I pray thee, wish not one man more. I am not covetous for gold, nor care I who doth feed upon my cost. It years me not if men my garments wear; such outward things dwell not in my desires. But if it be a sin to covet honor, I am the most offending soul alive. O, do not wish one more! Rather proclaim it, that he which hath no stomach to this fight, let him depart. His passport shall be made and crowns for convoy put into his purse. We would not die in that man’s company that fears his fellowship to die with us. And they shall think themselves accursed that they were not here and hold their manhoods cheap whiles we any speaks that fought with us upon Saint Crispin’s day.”
Coin : if you get your hands back on the coin, inform the head game master.
Theatre of Folly : You work at the Theatre of Folly, a performing troupe from Vodacce here to perform at a major opera house. There is a bit of friendly rivalry between you and the Circle of a Song, a restaurant where all the staff are performers, and you would like to out-perform them.

You became an actress in hopes of becoming more than simply another down-trodden girl in male-dominated Voddace. While many men saw you as simply a performing trollop, you were learning other languages, history, and the sciences. Instead of a life of misery and oppression, you became one of the privileged few, able to move among the nobles as if you were one of them. But you aren’t. They’ve made that abundantly clear. You were good enough for a night of pleasure, but not for marriage or lasting attachment. And when age has stolen your looks, you’ll be discarded like the trash they consider you. You decided that wasn’t good enough for you. You joined the Folly, a group of like-minded actors who operate out of the Theatre of Folly. Together, you spy on the noble Princes, expose their flaws and weaknesses to the peasants and seek ways to topple their rule. However, while you want to humble them, the Folly doesn’t seek their deaths.
But that is what the peasants of Montaigne are doing. They rose up against their nobles and seized power. More than that, they set to executing dozens, then scores of nobles. Killing not only those who held power, but those who supported and served them. Sounds like a good idea to you. But the Folly collectively decided to send some agents to talk to a group known as the Jacob‘s Political Society. They’re a secret society like the Folly, based here in Montaigne and they helped guide the Revolution onto its bloody path. Now, you’re supposed to convince them to stop the executions. In reality, you want to find out how they organized the Revolution. How did they make it work and could you do the same? One person you might ask is Efrain del Guzman, a Castillian merchant who is a member of Jacob’s.
Should you get a chance to perform, your favorite speech is that of a strange creature named Robin Puck who addresses the audience at the end of a comedy. “If we shadows have offended, think but this, and all is mended, that you have but slumber’d here while these visions did appear. And this weak and idle theme, no more yielding but a dream, gentles, do not reprehend: if you pardon, we will mend:
And, as I am an honest Puck, if we have unearned luck now to ‘scape the serpent’s tongue, we will make amends ere long; else the Puck a liar call; So, good night unto you all. Give me your hands, if we be friends, and Robin shall restore amends.”

Background: Legion is in the details. At least that’s what they say. And how else to explain how an Avalon spy should find herself in Montaigne as a part of a Vodacce theatre troupe. Well, the better explanation was that the Vendel Guild and a few select Eisen nobles sent you to Vodacce to investigate their mercantile practices. The Vendel and Vodacce are bitter rivals in trade while Eisen merely wants to make sure the Vodacce don’t interfere with them. You thought you could simply sneak into a merchant’s study, get a few details of their shipments and get out of town. But the Vodacce are an extremely paranoid people and you were quickly caught. The only explanation you could come up with was that you were trying to seduce the ugly merchant. Even then, the merchant tried to find out what you were up to and during the interrogation, you admitted that you had hoped he could get you a position in the theatre troupe he patronized. Soon enough, you found yourself in the troupe with a ten year contract.
After barely a year, you are ready to go home, but the theatre doesn’t want to let you go. You’ve heard hints that those who “resign” from the theatre in Vodacce sometimes have “accidents.” You’ve been paying less attention to your performances and their quality is beginning to slip, but they‘ve just delegated you to less important roles. But now is your chance. If you could find a way to convince the producers to fire you, you’d be freed of your contract and you could make your way home fairly easily. Perhaps if your performance here tonight is poor enough. Or perhaps if you convinced one of the waitresses from the Circle of Song to take employment with the Theatre of Folly, they’d let you out of your contract.
You did spot a surprisingly familiar face here tonight: Lady Luffwitz of Eisen. She was one of the nobles involved with the Vendel. You have a small notebook filled with information about the Vodacce shipping interests that you’ve gathered over the last year. Perhaps if you give it to Luffwitz she can help you escape.

Your favorite piece is from a tragedy about a pair of doomed lovers from rival families. “O Romeo, Romeo! wherefore art thou Romeo. Deny thy father and refuse thy name; or, if thou wilt not, be but sworn my love, and I’ll no longer be a Capulet. ‘Tis but thy name that is my enemy. Thou art thyself, though not a Montague. What’s Montague? It is nor hand, nor foot, nor arm, nor face, nor any other part belonging to a man. O, be some other name! What’s in a name? that which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet. So Romeo would, were he not Romeo call’d, retain that dear perfection which he owes without that title:–Romeo, doff thy name; and for that name, which is no part of thee, take all myself.”

Background:
While you were born the son of a Voddace nobleman, you’ve always felt your true allegiance lay with the common people. Perhaps it was because he tossed his mistress, your mother, away once she was with child. Or perhaps the misery and pain you saw among the street urchins and peasants as you grew. Regardless, you decided years ago that you had to find a way to lift up the struggling masses. Unfortunately while your spirit is strong, an accident as a child left you with a severe limp that prevented you from taking up arms. Instead, you had to rely upon your mind and your acting ability. You found others of like mind, known as the Folly, a secret society dedicated to overthrowing the nobility. You disguise yourselves as an acting troupe and you truly are quite skilled in classical theatre. Meanwhile you use your contacts to spy upon the nobles, reveal their inane actions and display their folly for all to see. Dangerous work, but thrilling in its own way. Still, your goal is to show the peasants that the nobles are no better than they are, not to slaughter everyone with a drop of noble blood. That’s why the Folly sent several agents here, to meet with another secret society, the Jacobs Political Society, who have urged the Revolution forward. Your two groups were once allies and now you must make them see where they‘ve gone astray. They must be urged back from the guillotine‘s platform before it is too late. If they don’t stop the executions, the peasants will be no better than the nobility were.
Strangely, you realized when Dore and his guards barged into the restaurant that you recognized one of them. The woman named Zabol Virineia, an Ussuran bodyguard, operated in Vodacce a few years ago as a mercenary. The two of you became friends. Perhaps as a guard, she might have information that would help convince the Jacobians to reconsider.
You’re also hoping to get a chance to try a new soliloquy. Its from a new tragedy named Vincinzio the troupe is practicing. “To be, or not to be, that is the question, whether ’tis nobler in the mind to suffer the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune or to take arms against a sea of troubles, and by opposing end them? To die, to sleep, no more; and by a sleep to say we end the heartache, and the thousand natural shocks that flesh is heir to. Tis a consummation devoutly to be wish’d. To die, to sleep; to sleep! perchance to dream: ay, there’s the rub; for in that sleep of death what dreams may come, when we have shuffled off this mortal coil, must give us pause: there’s the respect that makes calamity of so long life. For who would bear the whips and scorns of time, the oppressor’s wrong, when he himself might his quietus make with a bare bodkin?”

Background: Life is too short to not enjoy yourself. At least, that’s what you’ve always felt. So, you throw yourself into song, wenching and wine. Soon enough, you’ll have naught but the cold grave with only Madame Death for company and regret as your drink. Until then, you drift from livelihood to livelihood enjoying your life. Most recently, you’ve become an actor in the Theatre of Folly because the name appealed to you.
However, every now and then, even you discover something better, more important that life itself. Such as Madeline. Even though she was just a servant, it seems to unfair to call her just Madeline. Beautiful Madeline, superb Madeline, angelic Madeline. None of them is enough to describe this most perfect of women. You met her in Vodacce in the employ of a Montaigne noble who fled his home to escape the mob. Despite the difference in your stations, the two of you fell deeply in love. You even proposed, but she insisted that she had to return to her homeland, to help her elderly mother flee the country as well. She insisted that it would be safer for her to go alone and if you were to support her, you had to keep your job in the Theatre of Folly. That was the last you saw of her.
After weeks with no word, you joined this visit to Charouse, hoping to discover what happened to her. You learned that she returned home and was promptly arrested and condemned for her service to a Montaigne noble. The man who passed sentence was Citizen Yannick Dore, the same pox-ridden piece of slime who arrived here a few minutes ago. It is too much for you to bear. He must die. While you have little skill yourself, you know someone here who does. The Montaigne baker named Merron Vergogne was a scout who served Prince Mondavi of Vodacce for a time and you saw him kill a half dozen men in an ambush once. He could kill Dore. You just have to convince him to do it. And tonight. You cannot bear the thought of another day going by with Madeline’s murderer still taking breath. You’ve always been good at cards, so maybe you could win enough money to pay him for the job.
Even with this doom hanging over your head, you’re always happy for a ray of sunshine and it has come in the form of a fellow actor. Vinchenzo Pedrini offered to help you memorize your lines and then giving both encouragement and suggestions on how to improve your performances. He’s usually not this helpful, but his praise has really helped to lift your spirits.

Ironically, given your purpose here tonight, you‘ve generally played light-hearted characters. One of your favorite pieces is a speech on mercy and justice from the Merchant of Numa. “The quality of mercy is not strain’d; it droppeth as the gentle rain from heaven upon the place beneath. It is twice blest: it blesseth him that gives and him that takes. ‘Tis mightiest in the mightiest; it becomes the throned monarch better than his crown; his sceptre shows the force of temporal power, the attribute to awe and majesty, wherein doth sit the dread and fear of kings; but mercy is above this sceptred sway, it is enthroned in the hearts of kings, it is an attribute to God himself; and earthly power doth then show likest God’s when mercy seasons justice. In the course of justice none of us should see salvation; we do pray for mercy, and that same prayer doth teach us all to render the deeds of mercy. “
The playwright Alberto Orsino also asked you to study a eulogy dedicated to the Numan general Caesar by his friend Marcus. “Friends, Romans, countrymen, lend me your ears. I come to bury Caesar, not to praise him. The evil that men do lives after them; the good is oft interred with their bones: so let it be with Caesar. The noble Brutus hath told you Caesar was ambitious. If it were so, it was a grievous fault; and grievously hath Caesar answer’d it. Here, under leave of Brutus and the rest, for Brutus is an honorable man; so are they all, all honorable men, come I to speak in Caesar’s funeral. He was my friend, faithful and just to me, but Brutus says he was ambitious; and Brutus is an honorable man. I speak not to disprove what Brutus spoke, but here I am to speak what I do know. You all did love him once, not without cause: what cause withholds you, then, to mourn for him?”

Background: Love is tragic, dramatic, empowering and wondrous, but. unrequited love is just funny. For the last year, you’ve gone about your business in something of a haze. You’ve acted your parts, sang your songs, and danced your steps, but your entire heart and soul was really focused in devotion upon Veronica Corradin. One of the actresses at the Theatre of Folly, she is the epitome of grace and beauty. Despite that, she still maintains a spirit of naiveté and innocence that is a delight in a Vodaccean. In fact, when she speaks to other men, she tends to stammer and fumble in a charming way. Despite your interest, you know that she sees you as a friend. What she doesn’t know is that you are really the third-son of a petty nobleman. Your father didn’t care what you did with your life, so long as it didn’t cost him a penny more than educating your brothers already had. It seems like nothing, but it means that your marriage will be arranged by the family to cement political gains. So, all you can offer her is illicit love, something you refuse to do. Instead, you serve as her confidant and aide-de-camp, though you often find yourself subtlety sabotaging her efforts at wooing inappropriate beaus. You’re also hoping to convince one of the producers to give you a bigger role. You’d particularly like to tackle the role of Marcus in the tragedy of Julius Caesar.
However, you heard Madame Filin speaking with Orsino. They believe that Mercuri would be a better choice. You could hardly believe your ears. Mercuri is a buffoon, not a true actor. You’ve got to find a way to show them that he’s far too frivolous and inept to ever handle the role of Marcus. Your first step was to offer to aid him in practicing his lines and subtlety encouraging him to overact. He leapt at the chance and has really hung upon your words. You almost feel bad to deceive him like this.
Strangely, you recognize a familiar face here tonight. You met Lord Sivney O’Connell of Avalon in Vodacce a few years ago after you’d been attacked in an alleyway. Although a nobleman, he didn’t hesitate to roll up his sleeves and treat your wound. He may have saved your life that day and you’ve never forgotten. You’ll need to see if there’s anything you can do to aid him tonight.

Background: To the victor goes the spoils. That’s always been your motto. Whether you were struggling as a child for scraps in the street or as a struggling young actor, you’ve devoted almost every waking hour to competing for what you want. One sign of that is your skill in cards. You’ve spent years and won fortunes wagering on the turn of a card. Between that and your acting skill, you’ve earned a small fortune. A fortune you’ve squandered on poor investments and gambling tables. Like right now, you spent a lot of money to purchase a shipment of clocks and candlesticks from a man last night. But this morning, you discovered that while the merchandise is good quality, there is no market within Montaigne for such goods. You need to hire a ship to move them to merchants you know in either Altamira, Castille or Carleon, Avalon if you’re going to make a profit (300 guilders) on these useless knick-knacks. They buyers will pay off the transport cost and forward you the money. You could probably convince Madame Filin to let you use the schooner that you took from Vodacce, but having to admit you bought something so worthless would be embarrassing.
Because of stupid moves like that, you’re reduced to re-writing feeble classical plays into new shapes. The producers provide you with rumors and tidbits about Vodacce nobles for you to incorporate into the pieces, but otherwise, its just rehashing tired old plots. Still, you thrill to each opening night when it looks like the production will surpass all others, before things quickly slow down to dull routine. The excitement of the competition and the thrill the vagaries of chance are really all you have left to you.
Another good example is a little wager you have going with Filin. She wanted to stage a new production of Julius Caesar, but the question of who to play the important role of Marcus arose. She believed that Vinchenzo Pedrini could handle the role, but you suggested Carlo Naticelli instead. Naticelli has always played comedic roles, but you sense greater depths in him. The two of you agreed to a friendly wager of 20 guilders. You will both watch their performances on this trip and decide on one or the other tonight. Of course, you’re not above making a few suggestions to the actor you’ve decided to back.
Performing contest : to take part in this contest, you must sing a song, do a dance or perform a small soliloquy such as the one listed below. At the end of the night, the crowd will decide which group, the Circle of Song (contemporary) or the Theater of Folly (classical), has the better performers.
These days, you spend more time writing and only play enfeebled old men such as Polonius in the classical play, Hamlet. Your favorite speech from there is an exhortation to the young. “Beware of entrance to a quarrel; but, being in, bear yourself that the opposed may beware of thee. Give every man thine ear, but few thy voice: take each man’s measure, but reserve thy judgment. Costly thy dress as thy purse can buy, but not express’d in fancy; rich, not gaudy: For the apparel oft proclaims the man; and they in Montaigne of the best rank and station are most select and generous chief in that. Neither a borrower nor a lender be: for loan oft loses both itself and friend; and borrowing dulls the edge of husbandry. This above all,–to thine own self be true; and it must follow, as the night the day, thou canst not then be false to any man.”

Background: Women in Vodacce are usually treated as either demure wives, alluring courtesans or lowly peasants. Since none of those options appealed to you, so you had to find a different way. You began as a simple actress, more of a courtesan than an actress if the truth be told. Luckily, your skills in both were sufficient to attract the attention of a minor noble. Not powerful enough to guarantee your position, but powerful enough to help your career. He was also willing to help you invest your wealth. When he died, you’d managed to amass a small fortune, enough to found your own theatre troupe.
Now that your youth has begun to fade, you’ve been able to devote yourself to the investments, writing and other skills that make a theatre truly thrive rather than just survive. However, this wasn’t enough to which to devote your life. Instead, you began to gather others to your side, others who believed as you do, that a man’s worth is measured by the nobility of his character, not his blood. This group of people are all employed by your theatre and are known as the Folly. You mostly play pranks, spy on the nobles, and occasionally reveal minor aspects of their banal lives on the stage. So long as you focus on a spectrum of lesser nobles rather than any individual, you are left in peace. However, you’ve kept ties open to other groups trying to improve the lives of the common masses.
Unfortunately, one of those others groups, the Jacob’s Political Society, has gone too far. They were part of the impetus behind the Revolution’s rapid rise and its executions. Dozens, no hundreds, of men, women and children died at the hands of these Revolutionaries. Its time to stop the blood-shed. To show the peasants that mercy and justice are as important as ruthlessness and power. That’s why you brought part of the troupe here to Montaigne, so you could meet with the Jacobs and convince them to stop the bloodshed. You even had one of the fringe member, Javier de la Cruz, join you here as well. He tends to just provide shipping for the group, so you’re not sure how dedicated to the cause he is.
You did bring one substantial asset with you, the schooner Falsa Pista. It isn’t that you believe you’ll need a way to get out of Charouse in a hurry. But wouldn’t you hate it if you did and you didn’t have one?
On a side note, there are a couple issues within the Theatre of Folly to which you should attend. Samantha Morgan is an Avalon actress caught spying by a petty nobleman last year. He sentenced her to work at your Theatre for ten years as punishment, but the quality of her acting has dropped so low, that you’re ready to let her go now. You’re just waiting for her to ask. Also, the next play you want to stage is Julius Caesar, but you’re not sure who to cast in the vital role of Marcus. You thought Vinchenzo Pedrini would be a good choice, but your playwright Orsino thinks that Carlo Naticelli would be a better choice. The two of you decided to settle it with a wager for 20 guilders on who the better actor is.

Background: You’re glad to be back in Montaigne. You were happy to leave last month because the tense streets were just not safe anymore. Especially for someone who’d spent the last few months forging safe-conduct papers for enemies of the Revolution. One of your best customers was the Antoinette Fletchyr, the owner of this restaurant. You’re fairly certain that she was actually working with others to help smuggle nobles out of the city, but you really didn’t care. You just printed up your small pamphlets on crime and the darker side of Charouse. Of course, that was merely a cover for your forgery operations.
You’d worked out the perfect patter, warning someone of the dangers and brutality of the Revolutionaries and then offering to help them avoid any misunderstandings with the authorities. It worked well, but you just had the feeling that the Revolutionaries were closing in and you decided to leave the country. You wound up in Vodacce working as propman for the Theatre of Folly. You’ve been keeping a low-profile, avoiding any entanglements with the complicated Vodaccean politics. When you heard they were heading to Charouse, you decided to try returning to your country. If things were calmer now, you could simply remain. So far, things look fine. The only question is do you stay or return to Vodacce? Regardless of which path you choose, it would be good to have a bit more money with which to do it. Perhaps someone here is in need of a forged safe-conduct? You’ll need to make sure none of the Revolutionaries catch on to what you are doing.
Unfortunately, one of the people you’d been avoiding is here tonight. Revolutionary Guard Richter Mutz is a corrupt official who plagued you for a long time. He caught you selling forged documentation, but rather than arresting you, he simply insisted on a cut of the money. Then he kept coming by for a regular payment. Usually 20 guilders a week. You hate the parasite, but you don’t dare offend him.

(When checking paperwork, it should include the person’s name, a description of the person, and a proper seal. Most seals are black, indicating this is a normal citizen. Gold seals designate foreign dignitaries who should not be arrested without Council approval. Green seals designate Revolutionary agents who should be treated with every courtesy. Silver seals designate members of the Revolutionary High Council.)

Background: Home has never been quite so complicated. You knew blood-thirsty mobs screaming for justice and blood were coming to Montaigne. The nobles were just too disassociated, too uncaring of their people, so you joined a secret organization known as Sophia’s Daughters, dedicated to making the world a better place for everyone, regardless of the pain and suffering it costs a few. Some claim the Daughters can foretell the future, but you have no proof of that. For several years, you helped guide and shape things in preparation of the Revolution. You even worked with a group here in Charouse known as Jacob’s Political Society. You wanted to be here in Montaigne, to help guide and shape the mobs, to ensure that blood flowed in the streets.
But the Daughters needed you in Vodacce, to keep an eye on things there and to help smuggle oppressed women out of there. While you were there, you discovered another group who hid within the Theatre of Folly known merely as The Folly. When you learned that they were going to meet with Jacob’s Political Society to try to convince them to reduce the violence and executions, you knew you had to step in. You must keep the Folly from meeting with the Jacobs, or at least prevent them from stopping the bloodshed.
Your other mission here is to arrange for a shipment of high-quality lanterns to the Theatre in Vodacce. You’ve already arranged it, but you need to meet with the merchant Monique Dechaine for the receipt and deliver the 300 guilders you still owe. Then you need to find a ship to transport the lanterns back to Vodacce. The captain will be paid upon delivery. In a pinch, you could use the Falsa Pista, but you’d prefer to not pester Madame Filin in this matter since the lanterns really aren’t for the Theatre but for lighting subterranean passages Sophia’s Daughters is building in Vodacce.
As if that were not enough, you know that several members of the group, including Samantha Morgan and Rachel Echine are considering not returning to Vodacce. While you don’t particularly care about any of them individually, it would be a bad precedent for you to return to Vodacce with fewer members of the troupe than you leave and you’re certain that Madame Filin would blame you.

Background: While you were born a peasant and suffered brutally for years, you rose above it. Now, you masquerade as a street vendor, but in reality you are a member of a secret organization known as Sophia’s Daughter, a group dedicated to improving the world as a whole regardless of the pain and suffering of an isolated few. You’ve worked here for several years, guiding and shaping the people. When the nobles mistreated the peasants, you bandaged their wounds and helped them cope. When the mobs gathered, you were there to aim them in the right direction and focus their rage. When the nobles were arrested, you called for the first executions and when the mobs slowed, you urged them on. Along with the members of Jacob’s Political Society, you’ve helped guide the Revolution in its course, although few people know about that. So when you learned that a group known as the Folly was coming here to dissuade Jacobs from their righteous course, you had to be here. You’re going to stop the Folly. You will keep the executions coming and eliminate any threats to it. Particularly noble ones. All the nobles must die.
Sadly, nobles from other nations can usually obtain diplomatic immunity. The Revolution isn’t strong enough yet to forego all diplomatic contact with other nations, so you have to restrain yourself for the moment. Of course, that won’t apply if you can find proof of terrible crimes. Something to keep in mind.
There’s another familiar face here tonight: Lydia Gabriyon. She’s a manipulative and cruel woman who you found very useful in the early days of the Revolution. You hired her on several occasions to help with various little projects. A poisoning here, a condemnation there. She doesn’t seem to have any compassion or qualms about any act, no matter how vile. She seemed like a perfect recruit for the low levels of Sophia’s Daughters. She wouldn’t do for the upper levels, but she is perfect for performing distasteful deeds. So, you asked if she was interested in joining a group dedicated to advancing the cause of all mankind and she just wanted to know what was in it for her. You should talk to her some more and see if she’s really interested in joining the Daughters.

Background: Revolutions are like making a cake. You mix the ingredients together and then give it time to rise. You helped start the initial mobs that swept across Charouse and overthrow the government. As a member of Jacob’s Political Society, you were instrumental in the early stages of the Revolution. Then, you pursued the fleeing nobles and brought them back to face justice. Given your past as a military scout and soldier for both Montaigne and the Vodaccean prince Mondavi, you were the perfect choice. But while you were gone, things changed. Rather than a peasant-ruled country of laws and justice, you found only chaos and mob-ruled tyranny. You spent a few weeks preparing, setting up your baker’s shop again and simply waiting for the right opportunity. That opportunity came tonight when Citizen Yannick Dore, one of the Revolutionary Councilmembers, arrived here unexpectedly. He’s ordered countless executions and is now tormenting a noblewoman here after ordering her family’s death. Enough is enough. He must die. Perhaps that will alert the other Revolutionaries to the danger of their path and convince them to reexamine their actions. The trick is to pull off the feat without dying yourself in the process.
Luckily, you’re not alone. A companion of yours, a Vodaccean named Carlo Naticelli, from your days serving a Vodaccean prince is here tonight as well. He’s an actor in a theatre troupe, but he knows of your zeal for helping the people and agrees with them. You must speak to him, convince him to help you kill Dore. There are other members of Jacob’s Political Society here as well. You were all asked to meet some members of an allied group known as the Folly here tonight, but you don’t know why.
Another thing that might help is you’ve heard that Dore loves to gamble. You’ve wagered in the past and noticed that the cards always seemed to favor you. Perhaps you can use a game of chance to get close to him and wait for the perfect opportunity to strike.
Otherwise, you could speak to some of the merchants and others here in the room and try to arrange for shipments of flour or sugar. You don’t really need any, but it would allow you to move through the room without suspicion and as a baker, it wouldn’t seem odd.

Background: Montaigne has always been a land of potential. The nobles were brutal and oppressive, but that just instilled a strength of character among the common people unmatched in the world. The nation’s tremendous wealth and power were consolidated in the hands of a handful of undeserving. But you and a select group of others known as Sophia’s Daughters worked behind the scenes to bring about change. The organization is completely secret and only a handful of them know the deeper secret, that the Daughters have ways of telling the future. Relying on these predictions, you slowly helped prepare the peasants for years, educating a select few in techniques of leadership and inspiration. When the time came, things moved quickly and within a few hours mobs roamed the streets, throwing down the old power structures and attacking the noble-led government. You helped guide them, leading them in a series of bloody executions. They were regrettable, but it was the only way to ensure that the nobles did not return to power afterwards.
Only one more year of execution and you can ensure that the nobles never rise to power again. The Revolution will spread throughout Theah. You are not certain what will happen then, but by putting power back into the hands of the common people, you are certain a new age of prosperity and happiness will be born.
In the meantime, you spend your days as a simple candle maker by day and fomenting revolution at night. Another group known as Jacob’s Political Society has helped you lead the Revolution, though like you, they’ve kept their true involvement a complete secret. Sophia’s Daughters provided you with a prediction that someone would kill Councilman Yannick Dore tonight which would slow the killings. You must prevent this. You don’t know who the assassin is, but you recognize Anita Calissano, a Vodacce actress who is a Revolutionary moderate in the group known as the Folly, and Efrain del Guzman, a Castillian merchant and member of Jacob’s Political Society. Perhaps one of those groups are involved. Both are secret organizations you’ve worked with in the past. They probably believe you are a member of another group rather than Sophia’s Daughters. Given how useful they’ve been, you don’t dare expose either group, but you must keep Dore safe.
You noticed one other thing of interest tonight. Cedric Prevoye, one of the staff here, passed by you a few minutes ago and you felt a strange tingling at the back of your head. You found your eyes riveted to a strange coin he held. You’re not sure what it is, but you definitely want to get your hands on it. It was a gold coin, but tinged red with a skull on the front.

Background:
You’ve been wronged. Betrayed! And you mean to be avenged. What makes the situation difficult is that you were not betrayed by a person, but by the entire Revolutionary government. As a poor barber, you had little sway. The nobility refused to allow their doctors to treat common shop keeps such as your wife Marie, or even allow you to purchase good quality food. Instead, she lay there wasting away, far beyond your abilities to help her, while all you could find to eat was half-rotted turnips. But the rabble-rousers promised free health care for everyone and raised your hopes. You thought the love of your life would survive and the two of you would grow old together. The fact that the mobs sought any sorcerers, including those with a touch of glamour magic such as yourself, didn’t really affect you. After all, they wanted rich powerful noblemen, not simple barbers with a tiny gift. So, you kept silent.
You even joined their mob, protested and screamed, even helped hunt down the wayward nobles. But the doctors never came. The good quality food never came. The promises never came true. A few weeks ago, you met a man in a tavern where you had gone to down a glass of wine before returning to your wife‘s side. He was dressed in simple clothes, but they were fine quality. He bothered to ask why you were so down-hearted and you told him your tale. The man listened carefully and then asked where you lived. He said that he would ask a friend of his to visit you with some medicine and then the man slipped off into the night. You never even knew his name. You returned to your wife’s side with hope rekindled and waited. And waited. You sat there with your wife’s hand in yours and watched as the life slowly leaked out of her. A knock at the door interrupted your impatient waiting.
It was a Revolutionary patrol holding a man prisoner. The Michael Riez, the patrol leader, asked if you knew his prisoner. Only a fool admitted to knowing prisoners in Charouse these days, but in this case you’d truly never met him. The patrol leader said that the prisoner was a doctor who was heading to your house, but that he didn’t have the right papers. You begged them to let him help your wife, but they ignored you. When you rushed forward, they clubbed you down and you watched numbly as the patrol dragged away the man who could save your wife’s life. You vowed then to destroy the Revolution, by any means necessary. Marie died an hour later.
The only person who is interested in helping you is Lydia Gabriyon, the owner of the small hostel where you live. She’s always seemed so kind to you, helping you care for Marie in her declining health. She would do almost anything to help you, she told you so when you asked her to keep an eye out for the man with the medicine. She even wanted to take you out to dinner tonight saying you needed the respite from your suffering. However, life has its own ironies planned. The man you’d met in a tavern a few weeks ago is here tonight. In fact, you recognized him just as he died. But, you saw them drag the man’s body into the kitchen and followed them. The man was just pretending. He wasn’t dead! You quickly used your glamour magic to transform his appearance to a Montaigne merchant named Horatio d’Auber. Only the two of you and the restaurant owner know what you did and it must remain that way, because possession of sorcery is a crime punishable by death here in Montaigne. Strangely, the woman was able to swiftly produce another dead body, so you transformed it into a likeness of the “dead” man. You acted out of instinct, but maybe you really can pull this charade off. At least you have to try after he tried to help you.
You did spot one other interesting thing today. You noticed that one of the chefs was carrying an odd coin a few minutes ago. A gold coin with a skull on the front, it was tinged red. At first, you really didn’t think anything about it, beyond noticing a strange tingling in your hand as he passed by with it. You’d seen Cedric earlier in the evening without feeling that, so you’re sure it was caused by the coin he held. The only time you’ve felt that sort of thing is when faced with an artifact of the Sidhe back in Avalon. You believe it might be related to Glamour and want to get your hands on it.
Glamour : A type of sorcery which allows you to tap into the power of mythical figures for a portion of their abilities. You have the ability to transform the appearance of someone to another person that you know, so long as you don’t attempt to change any gross physical characteristics (the person must keep his sex and nationality). Your powers are minor so you’ve already expended them for tonight. You can break the enchantment whenever you like and it only lasts until dawn.
Coin : If you get your hands on the coin, speak to the head GM.

Background: Life has always been clear for you. It’s a matter of simply deciding what you want and then seizing it. For example, while you were abandoned as a child and grew up in the streets, you knew that you deserved better. So when you became a woman, you sought out Simon Gabriyon, a man who actually owned his own piece of property, a fine house which he rented out to a number of boarders. He quickly succumbed to your charms and married you. Then he succumbed to a dose of rat poison just as quickly. It was perfect.
You now owned your own property and could afford fine clothing and things. You seduced the tax collectors and blackmailed other city officials so you could continue living the life you loved as a young independent merchant. However, then you met the Browns. Marie was actually Montaigne and was nothing more than another piece of street trash, but her Avalon husband Charles was a fine figure of a man. Even his lack of hair made him seem experienced and wise. You decided that you would make him yours. Life is clear to you in that way. You wanted Charles Brown, so his wife had to die.
A few drops of poison and her health was soon fading. You even helped nurse the hag so you could continue dosing her and spend time with Charles. Things almost went astray when Charles told you that a doctor was coming with medicine for his wife, but you were able to alert a Revolutionary patrol. The promise of a night of passion was all it took to convince the patrol leader named Michael, a guard you see here tonight, that the doctor’s papers were out of order. Now that she’s dead, you simply have to remind Charles that he is alive and seduce the fellow. He’ll be much better off once he realizes what you can offer him, though you don‘t dare push him too hard. The other thing you would like to do is to investigate the man who died earlier. You’ve seen death, having caused enough of it, and that just didn’t seem right. Charles seemed very interested in the man, so maybe you can find something out of use to you.
There’s another familiar face here tonight. Nicollete Tamis is a manipulative and cruel woman. She was heavily involved in the early days of the Revolution. She hired you on several occasions to help with various little projects. A poisoning here, a condemnation there. She always seemed to know just where to strike for the maximum effect. She seemed to see something useful in you, because she wanted to know if you were interested in joining a group dedicated to advancing the cause of all mankind. You just asked what was in it for you. You should talk to her some more and see whether you want to join whatever social club she’s talking about.
