Queen Watanabe rules the small island of Halamana in the Far Seas with a deep love of her people. An ally and trading partner of Spain for over ten years, the island was one of the first encountered by Spanish explorers and allowed the sailors to plant a small colony and mission. While the people of Halamana have little regard for the trappings of civilization or the scholastic endeavors of the Theans, they love the friendly sailors and pretty trinkets of the Spanish ships.
Father Domingo Sanchez of the mission and the merchant Juanita Gordega petitioned the Spanish throne to overthrow the heretical Watanabe so the Spanish could control the entire island rather than just a portion while Queen Watanabe asked for Spain’s help in controlling these foreigners. Before the Spanish King responded, Father Sanchez and Senorita Gordega hired a crew of Spanish mercenaries known as Puno de Plata and kidnapped the Queen. The natives dared not face the mercenaries’ firearms while their Queen was held hostage, so Sanchez and Gordega ruled the island. A squadron from the Spanish Armada arrived with orders to support the Queen against the rebels, but with the Gordega in power, the Admiral refused to attack to restore a foreign monarch and returned to Spain for additional orders.
While waiting for the Armada’s return, a Dutch merchant named Hans Forster offered to break the spirit of the Halamanans and raise more money to continue paying the mercenaries by auctioning off the royal treasures of the palace. Since the palace contained fabulous natural treasures from across the Far Seas, strange artifacts of the ancients, and gifts from foreign dignitaries, people came from as far away as mainland Theah to bid on the items. Dozens of sacred treasures to the Halamanan people were quickly sold and pleasure yachtsfrom the Netherlands, Spain, France and England began vying for dock space. This created an atmosphere of pleasantry and relaxation for the foreigners amidst the subjugation and degradation of the Hamalanan people.
The adventure begins when the heroes arrive to bid on some of the treasures. They are approached by a desperate Princess Kalakamaki, Queen Watanabe’s daughter, and she begs them to help free her mother and to drive off the mercenaries. Regardless of the heroes’ answer, she leaves shortly after speaking to them but is captured by the brutal mercenaries only minutes later. It is up to the heroes to rescue her, free the Queen, break up the auction, and drive away the mercenaries. However, they must move quickly because if Father Sanchez sees his efforts falling apart, he will execute the Queen to ensure there is no monarchy to restore. Even if the heroes drive off the Castillians, Forster is willing to pay the mercenaries to continue his auctions.
