Simone is a slightly plump woman in her late twenties who serves as a doctor in a small city. The only child of a widower doctor from a long line of doctors, she learned how to treat wounds rather than play with dolls and how to perform surgeries before she had her first date. Piercing blue eyes and a full cheeks give her a pleasant, though not pretty, appearance. She favors dark clothing, often navy blue, but always wears a white coat on top when she is working. Her voice generally sounds exasperated and mocking, but her skills make up for any lack of social graces. She has a steady hand with a needle and a great knowledge of poisons and anatomy. She also has strong opinions on almost any given topic and no fear of sharing those thoughts. One of those opinions is that a lack of money shouldn’t prohibit you from seeking medical attention. She often treats the poor for free, but then must charge the rich and powerful higher rates. Observant heroes will note that she tends to talk more when the injuries she is treating are serious in order to distract her patients, while she simply snorts in disdain over minor injuries.
There are many possible story options with Simone. One is that her generally unsympathetic demeanor is not an act, but her true feelings. She is obsessed with furthering the world’s knowledge of medical treatment, regardless of the discomfort to individual patients. As such, she often tests unconventional treatments such as using sulfur or crushed charcoal on open wounds. While many feel she is needlessly charitable for treating the homeless, she restricts her most dangerous cures to such people and hides the failures within shallow graves. Her intentions may be good, but her methods cause tremendous suffering.
Another possible story option is that her skills are far less than most believe. She uses a combination of alcoholic potions and fast talking to give the impression that she is treating far more serious injuries. By moving from town to town swiftly, she’s managed to conceal the fact that her patients recover slowly, if at all. Unfortunately, a powerful nobleman is going to call upon her services shortly and it will take far more than fancy words to distract him from his injuries.
Another possible story option is that she has discovered a terrible secret. A number of her patients came in with injuries from a peculiar weapon, a double-bladed knife. The wounds were unique enough that she questioned the victims and discovered they were attacked by a tattooed man. However, from the times, settings and descriptions, she is certain more than one attacker was involved. She’s begun asking around, trying to find out why a group of tattooed men are attacking random people from a rich nobleman to a poor fishmonger around the city and why they’re intentionally stabbing people but not killing them. The tattooed figures have noticed her attention and marked her to be their next victim.
