GenCon Rundown

Posted in August 26th, 2011
by Danar in Uncategorized

So, I ventured out to GenCon 2011 this year. I’ve been going pretty steadily for a number of years and began running games about 6 years ago. It’s usually a blast, so I signed up to run a lot of stuff. Started out on Wednesday night with a game of Chill, a game of modern horror. Bodies have been coming into the Battle Creek morgue, but the coroner noticed that in each one, one of their internal organs shows no sign of decay. The heroes are sent in to investigate. Notable part of the adventure was that due to a really botched legend lore check, they were convinced that zombies were involved and had a weakness to pepper. So, after a Walmart run, they were throwing it around, trying to load it into shotgun shells, dumping small casks of it over each other. At one point, they even accidentally made zombie pepper soup. I cannot recommend the flavor.

The heroes eventually triumphed, though it almost cost them several of their characters’ lives. Particularly the guy who actually broke free of the villain’s mind control with an incredible roll and then got a really disappointed look on his face. He thought it was more dramatic when he couldn’t escape. Who am I to not give my players what they want? So I had the villain maintain the mind control long enough to gut him like a fish. Other interesting moment was that one of the players was from Michigan as well and had been in a Chill adventure set in Battle Creek, so she knew WAY more about the city than I expected. Turns out, Battle Creek is a popular setting for a modern horror game. Who knew?

7th Sea Tabletop rpg :   We were scheduled to run 7 tables, though we only had enough players to do 6 for the weekend split between three judges.  Each judge brought their own adventure (or in Jim’s case multiple adventures).  My own contribution was two sessions of Ancient Secrets and Salt Air, a mixed group of Explorers and pirates racing to find an ancient artifact of the Church before a villain could.  Der Kire, an Eisen ship captain, was one of the game’s highlights.  Der Kire refused to allow Der Kire or anyone else to speak of Der Kire with a pronoun, so we had a lot of fun watching Der Kire’s player attempt to fashion dialogue for that.  We also had a somewhat reserved and innocent-looking woman give the most filthy description of a distraction attempt I’ve heard in years.  Suffice it to say, she managed to distract a dozen Inquisitors from a clear and present target for burning.  Finale was a massive combat amidst death traps.  Having the hero throw a villain THROUGH several death traps was an great moment.

The adventure was somewhat based on the National Treasure movies, but I made certain the death trap sequences had decayed somewhat over the years (making some of the traps less dangerous).  The most amusing part of the second session was the fact that having gotten ahead of the villains, the heroes rushed through the traps, found the artifact and left before the villains arrived.  They specifically went out of their way to avoid the villains and simply let the npcs deal with them.  Both groups discovered that the Zarabanda (the forbidden dance of Love) is the wrong song to dance to at a very conservative Castillian noble’s home.  And both had a discussion/argument over the Porte sorcerer Explorer really wanting to get her hands on the holy artifact and the others…NOT wanting the filthy heretic to have the holy artifact.

Thursday Girl Genius Larp : We’ve been doing 7th Sea Larps for several years now, but this was the first time we branched out.  The game was entitled Agatha Heterodyne and the House That Ate People.  I ran two slots on Thursday and I think they went well.  Though both games ran shorter than I’d expected/wanted, so I’m going to need to work on that next time.  I really must apologize to everyone who played the first slot because I was not feeling well.  In fact, I scared one of my incredible assistants when she came back to the room to repair a prop and found me sleeping in the corner.  That nap really helped out for the second slot.  Anyway, both sets of players were really into the game and did a great job untangling the mystery.  They were stuck in a locked lab with a bomb counting down.  The Sparks and lab assistants worked with the lab materials, the jaegers (really tough constructs) argued over hats, the peasants debated who should be the next count and generally chose sides and everyone tried to reconstruct the mind transfer device.  Once the device was reconstructed, it quickly fixed the two who were already mixed up and then people tried to shove Othar’s brain into a box. Seriously.  Othar was everyone’s favorite go-to-victim.

The first game went pretty straightforward.  Othar’s body was taken by the dead Count, everyone fled the lab as the bomb counted down and Othar’s brain was destroyed.  In that particular game, Othar and Agatha as well as several others were incredible.  Krosp’s outfit and style were beautiful, particularly the way she hid under tables and batted at legs of passerbys.  I’m hoping to find some pictures, but I don’t have any handy.

I should note that when I ran this game at Marm dog, it went somewhat differently.  The girl playing the evil lab assistant continued playing evil after having the little girl brain swapped back to her.  The party decided she must still be the lab assistant, so they swapped her with the Count and then let the bomb blow up the storage unit with the little girl’s brain.  That’s right, the 9 year old girl was so evil they let her brain blow up.  The fact that she was being played by MY daughter just made it that much odder.

The second session at GenCon was even weirder.  The sparks somehow got the idea that the Count’s brain was in the lizards who served as his primary test subjects.  (I say somehow, but it happened because one spark kept questioning trained, but unintelligent lizards.  “Nod your head if you are the count.”  Poor lizard understands “nod your head”, but not the conditional statement.)  So Lars and the lizards switched brains, then Othar and Lars swapped brains, then the lizards and Othar, then Dimo (a Jaeger) with the Count and…there were enough more that I had to stop the action at one point and ask who had Dimo’s brain.  When no one answered, I knew that he’d been put into the box.  Process of Elimination as SCIENCE!  Anyway, the sparks sent one of the peasants running off with the bomb (with instructions on how to avoid being killed) so they kept the lab intact and everyone lived.  They even put everyone back in the same bodies (except the dead Count who was in the Jaeger, the Jaeger who was in Othar’s body and Othar who was in the box.   Poor Othar.  Apparently one of the younger players decided that it was VITAL that Othar never read the journal whose pages were scattered about the room and convinced the others of it.  So everytime he came close to it, Zeetha decked him.  It got bad enough that I had to ask when the wedding would be.  I think in addition to the fact that I was more awake, the big help this game was that I had assistants.  LOTS of assistants, for which I was duly grateful. I also want to point out more incredible costumes (still no pictures) including Tom and Michael Franklin (members of the Evil Team of Evil).   Another odd note, I anticipated that we might get a child or two in this game, but second session included three kids.  One was Krosp, one was a lab assistant thief, but the last one got to play a young 12 year old girl with the brain of the ugly mute albino lab assistant and she did it splendidly.  Another amusing moment was the way the haberdasher managed to go from a minor merchant to the new Count’s chief aide and a member of the Town Council.

Everyone did a great job, but the most impressive was our long-suffering prop mistress Jenn.  She built most of the props, but didn’t anticipate how rough people were going to be with them, so she then got to try to repair them during and between sessions.  Carefully people!  I brought one box of props/characters/stuff.  Jenn brought two more and I took them all home!  I walked out of the game thinking that for as well as it all went, Girl Genius is so prop heavy that I wasn’t certain how to do it again.  Of course, my wife and one of the other judges both began conspiring and they’ve already come up with a new setting for next year that should be great and have fewer props.  So now I’m definitely considering it.

Friday :   I had arranged for other judges to cover the tabletop games so I could go hit the halls.  I had a lot of fun wandering around, checking out board games and relaxing.  Noticed far fewer role playing games in the hall.  I did wander by the Plaid Chameleon kids game and laughed because the players looked like  4 munchkins and a troll.  After lunch, I went over and played in Nascrag, a d20 tournament with lots of role playing, puzzles and fun.  I’ve been a fan of theirs for years and had a good time. What’s not to like when you can kill and eat a little bunny rabbit and then carry the bunny head around as a finger puppet for the rest of the round?  (I know, I’m sick and wrong.)  We rocked our way through the first round so quickly that I had time to hit the hall a bit more before dinner.

I’ve made it a habit to go out for a good meal and a few drinks before the larp.  It just seems to go smoother that way.  Kilroy’s had great little pitchers of long island ice teas, so they became my restaurant of choice.  After that I picked up my box of props and went to the larp.  Jenn and Richard and the prop crew showed up with 2 more boxes of props including a dozen maps and chests and everything to transform the room into a tavern where the Pirate Court was to be held.  It looked AWESOME!.  Normal delays in handing out characters including WAY too few women.  I made the mistake of including the all female pirate crew.  Looked great on paper, until I started trying to find enough women to play the characters.  Then trying to find men willing to play as women.  Finally, trying to figure out which of the characters I could simply jettison.

More on the pirate larp later.

Saturday was a lot less eventful.  I showed up and ran my second session of Ancient Secrets and Salt Air.    I went from there to Nascrag and had another good round.  Crawled through the hall a bit and bought my wife a present. (Her 29th birthday is coming up.)  From there it was back to NASCRAG for round 3 which was quite short and the Award ceremony.  Happily took fourth place!  Especially since two of the teams (Evil Team of Evil who played in the Girl Genius Larp and Imperfect Echo who played both LARPs AND made most of the props!) who beat me were good friends and incredible role players.  I knew that if I wanted to place near the top all I needed to do was kneecap those two teams, but I just didn’t have the heart.  Stayed way too long drinking and chatting with the NASCRAG crew.  By the end of the day, my voice had completely disappeared and left this ugly croaking sound in its place.

Sunday.  Dear lord.  Running games on Sunday is so self-destructive that we should offer counseling sessions to the gms who do it.  One of my judges fell through, so I showed up to run the game.  Had to borrow an adventure from Marcie since I had only prepped to run my own game for Thursday+Saturday and I’d thrown out my notes Saturday night.  Thankfully, Marcie is a complete trooper and showed up as well.  She ran the game while I helped with some of the voices (all of whom talked kinda croaky).  It was interesting because I’d never seen Marcie run a game.  She’s only been doing it for a short while and only does it at GenCon so I enjoyed the opportunity.  Then I had to rush off to the OTHER game, the one I was actually supposed to be running.  Plaid Chameleon Presents, the only non-sold out game we had for the con.  I had hoped to run board games for a dozen people as well as the Battle of Richebeau (the championships of the 7th Sea CCG).  Well, we only had three people for board games and one to play 7th Sea.  That was the bad news.  The good news is that we had a good game of 7th Sea and the other players enjoyed all three board games they tried.  Ice Warz (combat figure skating), LARP the card game and Architect (featuring architects hired out of the asylum).  I’m hoping to actually print up a few of these games and sell them, so this was partly an attempt to playtest them a last time.  From there, it was back to the hall, browse a bit more and then head home.  Really weird to try to talk on the way home about how cool GenCon was when you sound like a dehydrated frog.

The Pirate Court Larp.  Wow.  I’ve been running larps for a couple years, but there’s just something really cool about getting 50 people together, many in costume and seeing what happens.  This year, I was pressed for time and just skipped a costume for myself.  Even worse, a quick cold/allergies had trashed my voice already so everything I said came out as a croak.  Thankfully the liquor and the adrenaline kicked it and it went great.  The setup was that the Pirate Lords, the most powerful and respected pirate captains in the world, got together to barter and conduct business.  Of course, they didn’t realize that one of the pirates has sold them out and had told the Vendel merchant marines where to find the Pirate Court.  The Vendel were scheduled to attack at the end of the evening.

The Sea Hounds were a mostly heroic group led by Reggie Wilcox.  Biggest plot was that Reggie wanted to elect a new pirate lord so there’d be enough Pirate Lords to demote Reis from their midst.  He got so close and then a Pirate Lord died.  Then he got so close again and just ran out of time.  Another of his crew was a greedy and superstitious pirate whose gold stash had been stolen.

Gosse’s Gentlemen were another heroic group led by Melinda Gosse.  She wanted to be a Pirate Lord and help demote Reis, but she got distracted by her first mate/husband who had been enchanted to want to divorce her.  The two love birds worked through some of their issues, but it looked like communication was still a bit of an issue.  One of their crew was a ladies man who was suspected of being the infamous Lefty Jack, a serial killer who preyed upon women.  Gosse sailed off with Rosamonde du Montaigne.

The Sisterhood was a group of all female pirates led by Rosa Maria de Barcino, secretly a former noblewoman disgraced by Gosse’s Gentlemen years ago when they kidnapped her to ensure her fiance didn’t kill her after marrying her.  She had mostly realized the Gosse were actually good guys, but still wanted to make them suffer.  Gotta love vengeful pirates.  Sadly, the Sisterhood ran into the problem of having an all female crew, so when we didn’t get as many women as I’d planned, they lost a few crew.

First mate Red was also running the sailing contest which consisted of a race involving tying knots.  I told Red that she could determine the winner however she liked.  Of course, a suspicious man would note that her husband won the contest.  The fact that her husband and the runner up were both former boy scouts…or that her husband is an actual sailor who finished a serious race across Lake Michigan a few weeks ago…well, what’s the fun of that?

The Brotherhood are a powerful group of prisoners turned pirates led by Pirate Lord Carlos Altenar.  He was strongly involved in smuggling fate witches out of Vodacce and helped arrange it even though one of his contacts managed to fall overboard, hit her head and get eaten by a shark.  Sad fate for the characters that don’t have a female to play them.  Altenar had a hostage (Rosamonde du Montaigne) because he caught her meeting with one of his men and didn’t realize the crewman (Max) was actually a traitor conspiring against him.  Max was also the winner of the Gunnery contest held during the Court using a nerf gun converted into a cannon.

The Inquisition ship were some of the most hated pirates there and one of the few crews to not escape the island when the Vendel attacked.  They got lucky when a pirate showed up with a holy artifact in hand.  They walked up and said, “you should give that to us.”  He shrugged, handed it over and asked for a job.  They hired him on the spot.  They didn’t even seem to mind when they found out he was working for another pirate crew as well.  Of course, the artifact would occasionally give the “holy” crew carrying it signs that certain people were sorcerers.  The Inquisition were also notable for buying one of the hostages (a Montaigne nobleman) present tonight and declaring their intention to burn him at the stake.  That sent me on a huge chase to track down who sold him to whom and why?  I’d seen the noble walking around free as a bird a little while ago, but it turned out that his captor took off his chains BUT said he was still a prisoner, then put the chains back on and sold him.  After stalling the Inquisition for half an hour while I got it straight in my head and seeing if anyone would try to stop them…they took him outside and set him on fire.  The heroic pirates finally turned up for the roast, so the Inquisition got tired of playing around and just stabbed him.  The best part was that one of the Inquisitors had to leave at the point, so I handed the dead noble that character sheet and he got to be reincarnated as one of the people who just killed him.  The heroic pirates didn’t take all of this well, so they started spreading rumors that the Inquisition captain was really a sorcerer.  It was odd having a dozen people walk up and ask if that rumor was true when I (as the writer) had never even heard of it.

The Inn – The Espada Sangrienta was a small inn on an isolated tropical island where the Pirate Court was held.  Of course, the entire staff had their own secrets.  The innkeep was a fence and retired pirate, one wench was a skilled swordswoman (with the most interesting chalkboard), the other was a master criminal.  The criminal partnered with the OTHER fence on the island into an officer of the Pirate Court and convinced the Pirate Lords to make HIM an officer of the Pirate Court.  So she became a master criminal behind the scenes.

The Fate Witch – The Pirate Court had its own sorcerer, a former fate witch turned Sea Witch who enchanted the entire gathering to give a lethal black spot to anyone who caused violence outside the dueling circle.  (Doesn’t include hostages like the poor dead Montaigne fop.)  She also had a fear of a woman who had already escaped a black spot, so she was lying to people to get them to kill her.  “Sure.  That poor defenseless man is the serial killer named Lefty Jack.  Absolutely.”

The Vestenmanjavenar Raiders was a band of Viking raiders who wanted to destroy their mercantile cousins the Vendel.  Led by Griss Hallisdottir (who mysteriously turned male), they were actually trying to begin peace talks.  That went…poorly.

The Vendel were represented by Jorund Guttormson and they were here to try to make a deal.  Specifically, he had a fleet of Vendel ships out of the harbor.  The thought was that he’d make a deal to release certain crews IF they promised to stop being pirates AND if they let the Vendel destroy the worst of the worst (primarily the Crimson Rogers).  Unfortunately, Jorund focused on other matters and didn’t manage to actually get around to telling ANYONE that the Vendel fleet was outside.  Matters finally came to a head when Jorund and Griss went into the dueling circle to fight to the death.  There had been a couple other minor fights prior to this and I let CheekyAmazon officiate them, but for a duel to the death between the Vestenmanjavenar and Vendel leaders, I stepped in.  Statistically, Jorund was doomed.  Sadly, statistics have no place in role playing.  Jorund managed to tie Griss for the first two exchanges and then crushed Griss with a massive blow.  Griss dies (destroying the Pirate Lord plan to elect another captain to the rank of Pirate Lord).  Then one of the other Vestenmanjavenar stepped in and kills Jorund (who still had not told anyone about the fleet outside).

The Vendel characters were able to rejoin their forces outside while the Vestenmanjavenar were left to the command of the traitor who had sold them out to the Vendel already.  The Vestenmanjavenar ship was the second ship that sank that night.

The crew of the Drake was another pirate ship present.  They were a generally heroic lot captained by Connor Lynch, a former member of Gosse’s Gentleman and the one who kidnapped Rosa Maria de Barcino.  This was the crew of pirates who had captured a decadent Montaigne fop and then sold him off to the Vodaccean merchant Vincenzo de Tonelli (who promptly sold him to the Inquisition for a profit).

They were also notable because Jacob Faust was seeking the serial killer Lefty Jack.  Faust had a few clues including the fact that he knew a particular ship had been present at several of the killings.  He even thought to look at the ship log books that some characters had.  Unfortunately, he did NOT deduce that the only ship present at all of the murders he knew about (and all the ones that other people knew about) was actually his own.  Nor did he realize that the only witness to a mysterious hook handed sailor killing women in scattered ports was the REAL killer.  SHE made up the story to cover her own tracks.  Maureen Leveque slipped away without being discovered, partly because everyone thought she was so nice and friendly.  Maybe because she got out her aggressions killing everyone she felt jealous towards?

Another interesting aspect was that Vincent Rochester was administering the challenge on navigation. Rochester (like the other judges) was told that he could select in-character the winner in any fashion he chose.  Turns out he had a rivalry with another of the pirates, so the winning navigator managed to challenge Rochester’s rival to fisticuffs in the dueling circle and beat the tar out of him.  Violence for the win!

The Crimson Rogers were the most notorious and evil band of cut-throats, thieves and killers in the world.  Led by the infamous Reis, most people feared them.  But few people outside the crew realized that Reis had actually died nine months ago.  He had been replaced by his bosun, a weaselly villain named Gaucher.  As writer, I set up every character to respect Reis and want to destroy the imposter.  So, imagine my surprise when I got to this crew during the wrap-up and discovered they’d decided to hold an INTERVENTION!  I had to ask them to repeat it because I couldn’t believe my ears.  They decided that they really didn’t mind Gaucher being in charge if he would just tone down the whole torturing his own crew thing.  I spent a lot of the evening just shaking my head and muttering “intervention”.  Another notable development was the cargo of gunpowder these fine sailors sold to the Inquisition ship.  This made certain that the Inquisition blew up at the first volley from the Vendel.

There was another notable pirate crew present, though the ship was not actually here.  One of the big plots of the game was that many of the sailors present were former members of the Venture captained by Mordekai.  Mordekai died years ago, but he left a buried treasure behind.  EVERY member of his crew had seen the maps to the treasure he just left lying around, but it was only when they got together that they realized the maps meant NOTHING.  It was the borders around the maps which spelled out a message when they were carefully laid on top of each other.

Did I mention the prop people yet?  The prop people were so incredible this year that I cannot stop praising them.  They brought the maps, all the stuff for the tavern (which they ran as the inn staff), and the sign for the inn (which was actually Mordekai’s long lost mystical chest).  THEN they served drinks up until someone mentioned Vodacceans and poison and everyone refused to drink.  And then started serving drinks again when people realized they were dying of dehydration.  The prop people even showed up early to dress the room so I could focus on more important things like having another drink.  Suffice it to say, I could not do this without them and they deserve all your praise.

Another group that deserves praise is the talented group of game masters who joins me every year.  Jim, Bill, Marcie and CheekyAmazon all showed up and ran a magnificent game despite not having read much of the adventure before the game began.  (not that they could have since I didn’t finish writing it until Tuesday night.)  And of course, my lovely, talented and patient wife who puts up with me and my moaning about how I hate the larp mostly without stabbing me.  The amount of effort, time and mental anguish involved in writing a 50 person larp every year is insanely large.  The ego-stroking applause, the exuberant gratitude of the players and the sheer joy of seeing the whole thing fall into place are the only reasons that I would ever do this.  I remember thinking “this won’t be too tough” when I sat down to write the first one.  A month later, I had an inkling of the depths of my folly.  Now I actually go into it knowing how hard it is, but the players and their damn enthusiasm keep dragging me back in.  For that, I can only say, I love you all.

I’ve posted a few other thoughts plus pictures from Gen Con 2011 on the Plaid Chameleon Facebook page.  Stop on by and check it out.

Gen Con 2011 is over and we survived it!

All the little Chameleons are back home in their own beds.  The convention was a great time and we had a lot of fun.  The games went great and were well received.  The second larp (Agatha Heterodyne) had its own batch of enthusiastic fans and the large Pirate Court larp packed them in once again.  Under pressure from people, I am creating a facebook page to document some of the stories and quotes from the con. Personally, I’m ready to just crawl into a little cave for a few weeks, but who am I to disagree with “people”?  So come check out Plaid Chameleons on facebook for stories and news.

While I finish writing up the characters for the 7th Sea Larp, I thought I’d let people look at a few fan cards I created.  Not sure if anyone else would play with these.  I know I would.

Don’t forget to check back as the year goes along.  We’re going to have various things going up this year.  They might be puzzles or riddles or games or stories or…well, who knows.

GenCon 2011

Greetings everyone.  The Plaid Chameleons will be at GenCon in force once again with a plethora of interesting games.  Here’s what you can expect :

Swashbuckling 101 :  This is a catch-all title for 7th Sea Roll-and-Keep tabletop games.  We run every morning and usually multiple tables.  While I write a lot of the games, some of the other gms come with their own interesting tales to tell.  Several of us were freelancers for Alderac when the game was coming out, so you should expect a rousing adventure every time.  Pre-generated characters are always provided.

A Chilly Evening : Mayfair Chill set in the modern day.  I like to start out the convention with a little scare on Wednesday nights.  The biggest twist this year is that I’m going to try something new.  Smart phones and other portable web-capable devices are encouraged though not required.  Any research you can do on your phone is acceptable.  Want to know how to defeat an ancient Mayan creature?  Hope your google-fu is good.

Fool’s Fiasco : One of my co-game masters has been yearning to play Space 1889 for a while, but this convention he did something about it.  He’s running the game in Savage Worlds and claims this is the game he’s waited years to tell.

The Future of Princesses & Scooby Doo and the Sea Monster of Oyster Bay :  The only way for role playing games to survive is to recruit younger players to replace us.  Whether Disney Princesses or Scooby Doo is your kid’s passion, they’re certain to have a good time playing with our extremely patient game masters.  (I don’t know how they pull it off myself.)

Plaid Chameleon Presents :  When we created Plaid Chameleons long ago, we wanted to give ourselves the freedom to experiment with whatever kind of gaming struck out interest.  Lately, we’ve been experimenting with board games and unusual card games.  We’re bringing a variety of twisted offerings this year.  From full contact figure skating to the spread of the early Christian Church, we try it all.  We’re also going to use this slot to run the annual Battle of Richebeau, the 7th Sea CCG World Championships.  Once again, I offer the winner a short story on a topic of his choosing.  A few years back, the winner got a story of drunk, undead monkeys.  Who wouldn’t want a prize like that?

Pirate’s Court : The event we are most known for, the annual 7th Sea Live Action Role Playing Game.  Pirate Lords gather to discuss important matters while their subordinates trade cargoes, ransom prisoners and just generally enjoy themselves.  The players are half the fun in these events because they really throw themselves into their roles.  Pirate or noblewoman, I’d like to think we have roles for everyone and that every role is a cool character.  (I’d like to think it because I wrote them all.)  Characters will be posted in June.

Agatha Heterodyne and the House that Ate People : We’ve been blessed and plagued by a mob of people every year who attend our 7th Sea LARP event and every year they want to know if we’ll run more LARPS.  This year they get their wish.  Set in the world of Girl Genius and featuring Agatha Heterodyne and some of her friends (circa book Four), this Live Action Role Playing game should feature enough weird Science and Gaslamp Fantasy to make your hair stand on end.  This one is smaller than the 7th Sea event, but we are going to try to run it twice to give all our friends a chance to play.  Better practice your laughs, mad scientists.  Characters will be posted in May.

Negotiations in Vodacce Minor characters

Posted in June 1st, 2009
by Danar in Uncategorized

Here are the characters available at the GenCon 2009 7th Sea LARP, Negotiations in Vodacce Minor.  This is a tenative list, meaning I haven’t entirely finished writing the LARP so some characters may change in minor ways (including names, nationalities and genders).  I will come back later and append a descriptive adjective or two to give people a better idea of what characters are like.  I will also keep this list up to date as far as which characters are already reserved.  If you would like to reserve a character or group of characters, please contact me at natbriros@hotmail.com.

Gencon 2009

Posted in June 1st, 2009
by Danar in Uncategorized

Gencon is the one major convention that I attend every year and every year it seems to get bigger.  I started running games for a handful of friends about 8 years ago and then began doing a LARP (Live Action Role Playing) game about 3 years ago under a different name.  This year Plaid Chameleon Games is running a handful of role playing games and a bunch of kids games in a variety of systems, but the 7th Sea LARP is our biggest event.

This year’s LARP is Negotiations in Vodacce Minor (LRP0900154) on Friday 8 pm.  Set in the world of Theah, the Vaticine Church and Vodacce nobles are meeting to discuss construction of a new cathedral. Of course, being Vodacceans, there’s a lot more going on. Can you navigate the complicated negotiations? Can you even survive?  Scheduled for 50 people, we think this year will be one of our best ever.  I’m going to be posting a list of the characters shortly.  If you’ve already signed up to play, look over the characters and  contact me at natbriros@hotmail.com to reserve your favorite.

Other games we’re running include Chill RPG (Wednesday 8pm), 7th Sea RPG (Ocean’s 7 Thursday at 9 pm and Saturday at 9 am, Swashbuckling 101 Friday at 9 am), a 7th Sea CCG tournament (Thursday at 5 pm) and a Faerie Tale game for the kids (Thursday 3pm and Saturday at  1pm).  We’re also running a kid’s LARP on Thursday at 1 pm and a game of our own system on Friday at 1 pm.  Some of these games still have openings and we can usually fit a few extra people into games, so we hope to see you at Gen Con.

The End : Gosse Fiction

Posted in October 8th, 2008
by Danar in Uncategorized

For those that are not fans of the 7th Sea storyline, the CCG in particular, may not know all of the backstory to this one.  Basically, Phillip Gosse is a famous and honorable pirate who retired to an island paradise named Utopia years ago, but recently returned to the sea.  Captain Méchant Necros, an old foe that he killed back in the day, returned as well seeking vengeance on the Black Freighter, an undead monstrosity of a ship.  However, Necros’ focus is not on killing Gosse, but on making him suffer.  He’s already killed Gosse’ nephew and forced the young man to serve on the ship, but Gosse suspected that the next target was his daughter Melinda.  This story details the final battle between Gosse and the Black Freighter.  It should be noted that one of these two factions was to be eliminated from the game after the battle.

Two of the featured characters deserve special attention.  Torvo Espada (Grim Sword) of the Gosse and Espera (Waiting) of the Corsairs were both featured in the story.  The intention had been for more stories about these two, but only Espada’s were completed.  Espera was an enslaved Castillian fire mage who fell in love with Dalia, one of his captors.  When she died and joined the Black Freighter, he vowed to rescue her.

Slip of the Noose : Fiction

The harbormaster Lt, Juan Rodriguez de Soldano, hurried down the shipyard dock after the Castillian sailor . “You are not authorized to leave port. We are under a White Plague quarantine. Do you hear me? Any vessel attempting to leave will be destroyed by the galleons anchored in the harbor.”

“I’m sorry sir. You will have to talk to the owner about that. He instructed me to tell you that we were leaving right after full dark.” The sailor hurried on.

“The tides not even right. I know that he is a little anxious to try out the new boat, but this is the wrong time for a pleasure cruise!” Rodriguez huffed.

The Falcon’s Roost loomed ahead under the full glare of the beating afternoon sun. The bright decorations that had adorned it this morning for the christening ceremony had been stripped away. Riggers scurried amidst the sails, preparing the vessel to cast off. The ship’s owner stood uncomfortably next to a tall Avalon gentleman. “Senor Vasquez! What is the meaning of this insanity?” Rodriguez strode up to the owner shaking his finger. The owner simply shrugged sadly.

The blonde man smiled and revealed the pistol that had been hidden behind the ship’s owner. “Good sir, thank you for joining us. I was certain that you would deal with this challenge to your authority personally.” The tall man spoke to the harbormaster’s escort. “Good job, Velik. Go ahead, cast us off. We’re ready to go. I’ll take these men to the forecastle.”

“What about Alesio? Any sign?”

He shook his head. “No, I had Willie check out the entire inn and the surrounding area. She’s just gone with no sign that she was taken. I’m sure its not the last we’ve seen of her.”

While the pirate’s leader was distracted, the Rodriguez hissed at the boat’s owner. “How did they get aboard?”

“Remember that girl with her nose in a book at the christening? After we had all the provisions loaded up and most of the crew had gone for a siesta, she came back later with him.” The owner gestured at the Avalon. “Said he was a wealthy merchant who was looking to purchase a fast boat. Then he pulled the pistol on me and told me not to move. The girl whistled and these pirates dashed aboard and leapt at the skeletal crew I had. They didn’t kill anybody, just threw the crew below decks. We didn’t even get off a shot.” The owner continued in a whisper, “I think these dogs were hiding beneath the docks”

With a small prod, the Avalon escorted the harbormaster and the boat’s owner to the forecastle of the ship. A gruff Inishman joined the Avalon who spoke to him. “Mr. McCorley, please keep an eye on these two.” The Inish man simple nodded a quick “Aye, aye.” Looking around, the Rodriguez clearly saw that the sailors barely numbered enough men to sail the boat. “What’s going on here?”

“We’re stealing a boat. Hadn’t you noticed?”

“And who are you?”

“My name is Jeremiah Berek, formerly of the Sea Dogs. Now with the Brotherhood of the Coast.”

“You swine! We let you pirates berth outside our harbor and sell your plunder here and this is how you repay us?”

“You broke that agreement when you aided the fate witches in destroying our ship and putting a price upon our heads. You even let the fate witches patrol the docks to look for any stragglers they might have missed. Luckily they didn’t know where to look or that the shipyards had a boat that was ready for her maiden voyage. But now we really need to break out of this little quarantine of yours. And the way we look at it, you owe us for your betrayal.”

“Have you ever seen anyone die of the White Plague? It’s a horrible, lingering death. There’s been a case of it here in town and no one can leave until disease is contained. And if you spread the disease simply because you didn’t want to be late, I will personally hunt…”

“Do not concern yourself, sir. While my companions were busy finding the perfect boat for our little jaunt and finding some more bodies to sail her, I was investigating this ‘Plague.’ The only people to see the infected crew members were the passengers of a Vodacce vessel that came in yesterday. That vessel left minutes before the quarantine was declared. And since those former passengers burned the Hanged Man down and tried to kill our entire crew, I’m certain that it was simply a scare to close the harbor. Those fate witches wouldn’t even blink at starting that rumor. And unless we get to our men and get out of here, they will all die. I will not allow that.”

“Your ship burned down last night. Any crew on it must have died.”

“They would have. In fact, that was the fate witches plan. But I found out about it. We were able to semaphore ‘Danger’ to them. Enough to put them on their guard without alerting your vessels out there. Then I had one of our men swim out there under cover of darkness to let them know what to do. The boat was almost deserted by the time of the fire.”

“Impossible. Those tides are too strong. And where could they go? There were no other boats out there last night. Your entire crew couldn’t have made it to shore without being seen.”

Berek smiled and pointed to the lighthouse on a small rocky island a few miles out from the port.

“Impossible. We knew that lighthouse was vulnerable to attack, so we rebuilt it so that one man could hold off a score of men. And we have a dozen men out there. We would have heard or been signaled if someone had tried to take it last night..”

“Except that our man came from the top. He should have been able to incapacitate everyone inside and let our people without difficulty.”

“How could he possibly get to the top of that lighthouse, unless he was one of those damned Porte mages?”

“No, no. He just climbed the outside of the lighthouse.”

“You’re dreaming. No man could pull that off.”

“We’ll see. Perhaps you are right and no one survived. We’ll just have to go out to the lighthouse and find out for sure. And Sean, we’ll be needing a new first mate with Alesio gone. If they did survive I know one man that should be made first mate. If he pulled off three impossible feats last night, then imagine what he could do with the crew. Reminds me a certain highland lass.”

“So you are just planning on sailing out there past the navy vessels anchored at the mouth of the harbor. You ARE cocky enough to be Berek. But your luck won’t get you past them.” The harbormaster scowled at the grinning Avalon.

Berek’s somber face broke into a mischievous grin. “No. It won’t. You will. We are going to approach one of the blockade’s ships. You are going to hail her. You are the harbormaster and personally selected those ships. When you tell them to allow us to pass so you can inspect the boat that burned, they will let us pass without inspecting us too closely for fear of the White Plague.”

“Very convenient. Except for one thing.”

Berek’s face suddenly paled. “And what would that be?”

Lt. Rodriguez folded his arms over his chest. “I won’t do it. I won’t help you break the blockade.” He paused when he saw the set cast of Berek’s face.

“The lives of my crew here. The lives of our men from the Hanged Man. The lives of the Castillian crew below decks. The lives of the Castillians on those other boats. And your own life all depend upon it.” Berek’s voice rose with conviction. “If you help us, no one dies. If you don’t, then a lot of people will die. I am not threatening anyone. I do not kill hostages. We will simply fight out way out. That will cost lives. Some of the prisoners will not survive the fight. Cannonballs have little finesse.” Berek looked out into the harbor for a moment. “But we will get through that blockade. They saved me from certain death. It’s time I returned the favor.”

Staring into his eyes, the Rodriguez realized this man meant it. He would fight his way out if there was no other choice. And with surprise on his side who knew what could happen. Especially with Berek. Castille couldn’t afford the destruction or even damage of any of her galleons with the Montaigne Admiral on a rampage. Closing his eyes, he whispered, “I’ll do it.”

“Good. We’ll be stopping at the lighthouse Mr. Wilcox and the rest of the crew. We will drop off most of the prisoners then. We may need to hang onto a few of you longer, but I guarantee that you will not be harmed.” As the Falcon’s Roost sped through the dark night, Berek turned his face towards the open sea. The wreckage of the Hanged Man was out there. But there was still time to save her crew. There had to be.

Rodriguez’s Duty

Posted in September 23rd, 2008
by Danar in Uncategorized

Salt spray splashed onto the deck of the Falcon’s Roost as she sped along under full sail through the cloudless night. The moon was a thin sliver which dabbled light across the tops of the waves without illuminating the depths. Juan Rodriguez de Soldano stared up at the familiar shapes of the Southern Cross and the Siren. The constellations seemed near enough to touch until a harsh laughter behind him disturbed his tired reverie. He glanced over his shoulder at the group of fishermen sitting together on the deck passing a bottle. They’d taken them aboard when the Brotherhood had finally landed earlier today. After two days without rest or sleep as the Brotherhood evaded the Castillian patrols, the crew had been happy to take on fresh swabs. He’d seen rougher men headed to the gallows, but rarely elsewhere.

True to his word, Berek had released all of the captives at the fishing village. They’d all left except for Juan. As harbormaster, it was his duty to bring this boat back to its rightful owners, especially after aiding these pirates in seizing it. Berek had understood and allowed him to stay aboard and given him the run of the ship in exchange for his word that he wouldn’t act against the crew. Juan didn’t know how he could gain control of the ship without breaking his word, but he had to try.

It was funny. He’d begun to think that these Brotherhood of the Coast buccaneers weren’t that bad. For pirates. They were reasonably courteous and had avoided injuring the captives. They were able fighters and excellent sailors. But they were exhausted and fuzzy headed from stealing the Falcon’s Roost, escaping from port, finding new crew and freeing the captives. Still to leave new crew as the only ones on duty seemed reckless when they’d been hired right out of the taverns. They’d snuck more rum on board and spent the time since everyone retired to continue drinking. How anyone had missed the fact that they were reporting for duty drunk was beyond Juan. Or maybe the Brotherhood just didn’t care. This never would have happened on board a ship of the Castillian Armada. Juan sighed and turned his attention back to the open ocean. He felt exhaustion weigh upon his own eyelids as well. Soon he’d need to head to the corner the first mate had assigned him.

A shower of meteors filled the sky overhead with a faint light. Watching them fall, Juan’s eyes suddenly narrowed and his breath caught. Across the dark waters, he saw the shadow of a boat under sail silently gliding closer. A Castillian galley would be lit up, but who else would be out here? Looking down, he chuckled at the thought when he stood aboard a darkened pirate ship himself. Glancing over his shoulder again, he muffled a curse. The fishermen had lit a lantern on the aft deck and were pulling out guitars and hand drums.

He called out above the low music, “Stow that! There’s another ship headed this way.” The fishermen laughed and began playing louder. There was no sign that anyone below decks had noticed. Turning back to the open sea, Juan peered into the darkness, looking for any sign of the other ship. His night vision slowly returned and he could barely make out a faint outline far to portside but approaching rapidly. Juan looked around for help but no one paid any attention to him. He did spot the port side deck cannons gleaming in the faint light of the lantern. Made of the finest steel and still covered in a light sheen of oil, these were the best cannons the Castillians could spare for such a small boat. Juan sprang into action and broke open one of the barrels of gunpowder stowed on deck. It would only be enough to load two shots before more would need to be brought from the powder room.

As Juan began loading the guns, one of the fishermen called out to him, “Hey, stop dat.” Juan ignored him as he grabbed the rammer’s rod and spun it into position. Three quick jabs and the first gun was ready. As Juan turned to the second, the fisherman strode up yelling for him to stop as he fumbled with a cutlass. Juan swung the rammer’s rod, slamming the shaft into his stomach. The fisherman doubled over and Juan swung the padded end around into the man’s head. He dropped to the deck like a sack of floor and Juan began ramming the second cannon. As he finished, he dropped the rod and stared out into the darkness to find the dark shape closer and more distinct. It was smaller than he originally thought and with excellent discipline since no sign of light showed aboard her. With a shudder, he realized she must be a Montaigne frigate trolling for Castillians. A number of frigates had been cruising these waters since the blockade was broken, but he’d never heard of them running at night. If the Juan didn’t do something before she came around to bring her guns to bear, the Roost would be her latest victim.

Juan rushed back to the stack of cannonballs near the center of the deck and plucked the top one off. He waddled it back to the cannons and pushed it into the barrel. As he rushed back for another, the other fishermen noticed him and their downed comrade whom he stepped over. One of them grabbed the lantern and a group of three brutes joined him in advancing upon the cannons. Though they wove from side to side slightly, they handled their weapons with familiarity.

Juan slipped the second cannonball into place and kicked the latches of the trapdoors which held the seawater off the guns. There was no time to aim the guns or any crew to shift them, so he simply eyed the Montaigne frigate’s shadow growing as it came closer and tried to estimate its advance. He nodded and spun towards the advancing thugs. Juan grabbed the lantern from the hands of the leader and smashed it down upon the first cannon. The oil spread across both guns and the deck between them before igniting with a whoosh. Juan dove to the deck and clamped his hands over his ears as two shots blasted into the darkness. The thugs scattered as the guns recoiled wildly.

A brilliant ball of flame lit up the sky from the suddenly revealed Montaigne frigate. The fishermen cried out in surprise and one in pain as he clutched his chest where he’d been hit a glancing blow from the caroming cannons. There was a rush of feet as the Brotherhood crew rushed onto the deck. A secondary explosion rocked the Montaigne vessel and the dark figures of her crew scurried about and tried to put out the flames.

Juan stood on uncertain feet and a firm hand clapped him upon the shoulder. It was a bleary eyed Berek who nodded at the burning frigate. “Your work?” he inquired with a raised eyebrow. Juan nodded. “Good shot. Looks like you got a direct hit to the powder room.”

Behind them, Juan heard the first mate and his brother yelling at the fishermen and smashing crockery still filled with rum. Juan smiled, “Si. I couldn’t let the Montaigne damage this boat. It’s my duty to return it to its owner in good shape.”

The frigate dropped her colors as another explosion lit up the night. Berek smiled and called out. “They surrender, boys, and we can spare an hour. Bring us alongside. We’ll take off the crew and grab as much loot as we can.” He and Juan stood watching the frigate burn as the Brotherhood topmen adjusted the sails and brought them around.

Greetings all.

Just wanted to drop a quick word to our visitors.  We’re updating fairly on a regular basis now with 7th Sea fictions popping up every few days.  A few of these require some knowledge of the world of Theah to understand everything, but even if you’ve never heard of Berek, they’re still fun stories.  We’re also posting complete adventures and a few other items.  If you have comments or thoughts about anything, feel free to stop by the forums.  I’ll also strive to answer any questions you may have about the adventures, fiction or anything else.

Dance, Dance, Montaigne Revolution

Posted in August 22nd, 2008
by Danar in Uncategorized

A number of people requested it, so I posted this year’s Gen Con 7th Sea Larp. (http://plaidchameleongames.com/dance-dance-montaigne-revolution/) This is a Plaid Chameleon production and all my judges did a phenomenal job making it work. If you have any questions or comments, feel free to ask away. I’ll do my best to answer them. I will admit that a few minor changes may have taken place after I finished writing, including the removal of a half dozen characters, but hopefully people can get the big picture. If people enjoy this one, I have several other larps from previous years that I am considering posting as well.

LARP Info

Posted in August 4th, 2008
by Danar in Uncategorized

As we get closer to Gencon, I wanted to make sure there was more information for those of you following along. Here’s the player’s Briefing.
7TH Sea LARPThe World : 7th Sea is a role playing game from Alderac Entertainment Group (www.AEG.com) set in a world similar to ours, but where swashbuckling adventure and dramatic heroism prevail. In the lands of Theah, Montaigne is the mirror to France after its Revolution where style still remains paramount. Avalon is Great Britain where legends have a power far beyond mere stories. Eisen is a war-torn Germany still divided by religious and cultural differences where martial prowess is a way of life. Castille is Spain, still recovering from a recent invasion from Montaigne, where passion drives the people towards greatness.

Dance, Dance, Montaigne Revolution

Posted in July 3rd, 2008
by Danar in Uncategorized

I’m finally beginning the finalization process for the Gen Con Larp.  I’ll admit that its taken far more time than I’d wanted, but we’re actually in pretty good shape.  We have all the judges, the character sheets and props are ready and envelopes are being stuffed as I type this.  So, we wanted to let people have a glimpse of what the Larp will look like.

This year, we’ve set it in the Circle of Song, a small restaurant in Charouse, at the height of the Montaigne Revolution.  While the mob outside howls for more executions, the patrons and staff can relax and enjoy themselves.  The Circle of Song lives to entertain, in fact all the staff and some of the guests are actually performers who will grace us with their talents this year.  Some of the players will be provided with short soliloquies, but any other forms of entertainment would be welcome as well.  You can sing, you can dance, after all, this is Montaigne.

Sadly, the harsh reality of the Revolution cannot be kept out as a group of Revolutionary forces insists on coming inside for some entertainment.  Those who despise the Revolution are also present, though they’ll need to keep their feelings well hidden or face execution themselves.

Below is a complete list of the characters.  If any of these strikes your fancy, please contact me at natbriros@hotmail.com to reserve it.  I’ll try to post additional information over the coming weeks.  Until then,

-dana
